The Reverend
Dr. J. G. McCann, Sr., is a Bronx native, one of the eight
children born to the late Ruben O. McCann, Sr. and the late
Frances L. Spencer. Dr. McCann, who is also referred to as
"Johnnie," was called to preach God's Word on January 8,
1981. He started his ministry as a Youth Minister at the
Thessalonia Baptist Church in the Bronx. Since his initial
call to preach, he has always possessed a deep fervor for
evangelical preaching. Dr. McCann was licensed to preach the
Gospel of Jesus Christ on June 12, 1983 by the Thessalonia
Baptist Church in the Bronx under the leadership of Reverend
Dr. Shellie Sampson, Jr. He was later ordained under the
same leadership of Dr. Sampson on February 1, 1985.
Dr. McCann received his Associate of Arts Degree, majoring
in Liberal Arts, in 1989 from Bronx Community College. He
received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1991 from Herbert H.
Lehman College, majoring in philosophy and minoring in
psychology. Graduating with high honors from his
undergraduate studies (Cum Laude) led to a full scholarship
to attend Drew University Theological School located in
Madison, New Jersey.
Dr. McCann obtained his Master of Divinity Degree on May 15,
1993, his Master of Sacred Theology Degree on May 19, 2001
and received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Drew on
October 27, 1995.
Dr. McCann married Tselane S. Sampson on January 5, 1985, at
the Thessalonia Baptist Church. Tselane earned a Bachelor of
Arts Degree in Sociology and a Master of Science Degree in
Education, from Hunter College, New York City. They are
blessed by God to be the parents of three children, Johnnie,
Jr., Sulure Grace, and Tseohnni Lenora-Mia.
On December 17, 1984, Dr. McCann was called to be the Pastor
of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New
York. On December 30, 1992, the St. Luke Baptist Church
Family of Harlem, New York, overwhelmingly voted and called
on him as their Pastor. He graciously received and agreed to
this call.
Dr. McCann is a multi-faceted young man who is active and
involved in many organizations such as the Hampton
Ministers' Conference of Virginia; several Ministers
Conferences in New York; and Phi Beta Sigma Incorporated,
Beta Psi Sigma Chapter. Serves as Assistant Chaplain for the
New York City Transit Authority; Chaplain for MTA Police. He
also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Drew University.
Dr. McCann is the editor of Lift the Veil; author of He’s
Alright; Christian Stewardship; It’s a Lordship Factor; How
to R.E.A.C.H. Black Men for Christ; Great Pearls from the
Biblical Treasure Chest on Christian Stewardship; Great
Pearls from the Biblical Treasure Chest on Evangelism; Great

Great Pearls from the Biblical Treasure Chest on Christian
Marriage. He served on the preaching team for the National
Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., under the leadership of the
Foreign Mission Board, where he preached in venues of Africa
such as South Africa, Swaziland and Malawi.
Romans 8:28 is a favorite scripture of Dr. McCann's.
