Summary : For most biomedical researchers and academics, preparing conference abstracts and posters is an important part of professional life. With good preparation and practice, all scientists can produce abstracts that act as effective ambassadors for their research. A well designed poster can help you to enhance your professional reputation in addition to communicating your data. This book aims to help you achieve these objectives. This book is designed for you to use when you are actually preparing a conference abstract or poster. It is intended to answer the most frequent questions, and to help you avoid the most common problems and pitfalls. Just dip into any chapter and you will find a range of tips relevant to the abstract or poster you are preparing right now. As a researcher and academic, you need to be able to disseminate and communicate your research work and findings. Summary : Mr O'Loughlin's one and only volume of abstract poems can be read (in the main) like an ordinary or mainstream volume of free verse, except that the verse is somewhat freer - and possibly lighter - than would normally qualify for poetry of that ilk. Nevertheless we believe it stops well short of being 'word art', even if some people might regard it as degenerate verse and therefore subversive of poetry, as normally understood by that term.

Summary : A fiftieth birthday is a good one to celebrate-old enough to be ex perienced and mature, but not so old as to be an antique. And if the fifty years have spanned as much change in scientific affairs as has occurred during the lifetime of Biological Abstracts it is surely time for a stocktaking. The leaders of biology in 1926 simply could not have imagined the condi tions of 1976. And few biologists active in 1976 can imagine what 1926 was like. That was before the explosive growth of federal funds for research and development, before the huge swelling of graduate enrollments and degrees, before World War II, even before the Great Depression! A few old-timers can remember 1926, and Bill Steere will forgive me for calling him an old-timer. After all, he provides the evidence himself; as a graduate student he met the first editor when Biological Abstracts was only three years old, and he has known all its later editors and administra tive officers. What he does not say is that tn length of service to BIOSIS, in seniority, he stands among only a few past and present members of the board of trustees; nor does he mention that at least as frequently as any other biologist he has been called upon to serve on governmental and associational councils and committees dealing with policy and strategy concerning the abstracting, classification, and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Surely he was the right choice to write this history.

Summary : Despite their changing role, abstracts remain useful in the digital world. Highly beneficial to information professionals and researchers who work and publish in different fields, this book summarizes the most important and up-to-date theory of abstracting, as well as giving advice and examples for the practice of writing different kinds of abstracts. The book discusses the length, the functions and basic structure of abstracts, outlining a new approach to informative and indicative abstracts. The abstractors’ personality, their linguistic and non-linguistic knowledge and skills are also discussed with special attention. Despite the relatively large number of textbooks on the topic there is no up-to-date book on abstracting in the English language In addition to providing a comprehensive coverage of the topic, the proposed book contains novel views - especially on informative and indicative abstracts The discussion is based on an interdisciplinary approach, blending the methods of library and information science and linguistics

Summary : Abstracts contains the abstracts of work presented at the 7th International Congress of Pharmacology: invited lectures, symposia, methodological seminars, and free communications. The abstracts are organized in chronological order of presentation at the Congress. Some abstracts focus on chemistry and biochemistry of pituitary endorphins and their precursors; the biosynthesis and release of the enkephalins; enkephalin dynamics and neuronal localization; and physiological and pathophysiological relevance of the opiate receptors and their endogenous ligands. Other papers center on the mechanism of muscarinic receptor action; regulation of cholinergic receptor metabolism in skeletal muscle; the role of vitamin E in ozone-induced pulmonary toxicity; alcohol and electrophysiology of the central nervous system; and pharmacokinetic aspects of drug-alcohol interaction.

Summary : CONTEMPLATIVE ABSTRACTS is the logical sequel to 'Abstacts' (1983) which, being readerly, or capable of being read, was non-contemplative and therefore a precondition of abstract poems that require only to be contemplated, since effectively a species of word art. The five books in this project represent different stages in John O'Loughlin's development of a non-readerly, or contemplative, style of poetic composition, and have also been published separately under the headings 'Contemplations' (1985), 'Supercontemplations' (1993) and 'Ultracontemplations' (1994), the first of these being in three books and therefore containing the greater percentage of the material now available in one volume, as the collected contemplative abstract poems.

Summary : Nanotechnology is a 'catch-all' description of activities at the level of atoms and molecules that have applications in the real world. A nanometre is a billionth of a metre, that is, about 1/80,000 of the diameter of a human hair, or 10 times the diameter of a hydrogen atom. Nanotechnology is now used in precision engineering, new materials development as well as in electronics; electromechanical systems as well as mainstream biomedical applications in areas such as gene therapy, drug delivery and novel drug discovery techniques. This book presents carefully selected abstracts of the last 5 years in this frontier field. Special access is provide by author, title and subject indexes.

Summary : This volume contains abstracts of most of the significant scientific literature dealing with prostaglandins published between 1906~when certain biologically active tissue extracts first stimulated the speculation of researchers~and 1970~when the use of prostaglandins for experimental control of fertility and induction of labor had been reported from six countries. Of the more than 4000 articles now identified which were published between 1906 and 1972, approximately half had appeared in print by the end of 1970. A second volume will cover the material printed in 1971 and 1972 with special emphasis on the role of prostaglandins in reproductive physiology. The reasons for publishing this considerable compilation of data are twofold. On the one hand, prosta· glandins, a family of fatty acid derivatives first identified in human semen, have been shown to have great and varied effects on all aspects of human physiology due to activity at the cellular level as mediators in the formation of cyclic AMP. The study of prostaglandins is considered today one of the most promising fields in the biological sciences. Secondly, as is now recognized, prostaglandins play an important role in reproduction, influencing both male and female fertility. It is hoped that this volume will make the results of early prostaglandin research available to investigators throughout the world, including especially those in developing coun· tries who may not have easy access to such material.
