Summary : Some of the futuristic applications are nanotubes for electrically conductive coatings and to increase the rate of reaction of thermoset resins; organosilane dendrimer coatings; buckyball coatings for machine parts; and metals for conductive coatings in inks. The technology is limited to substantially specialized applications due to the high cost per unit volume needed to reduce the size of the particles and the need to add surface modifiers to prevent the particles from agglomerating. Recent research efforts focus primarily on the functionalization of the particle surface of the nanoparticles to make them more compatible with the coating resin systems, so that easy dispersion, low viscosity, and covalent bonding are provided between the particles and the resins.

Summary : Polybenzoxazine is a novel class of thermosetting material that belongs to the family of addition-curable phenolic resins. It is a promising high temperature polymer in view of its outstanding thermal, physical, and mechanical properties that are beneficial for their application in aerospace and microelectronics industries. The first objective of this book is to provide the reader with information on the developments and properties of contemporary thermosetting polymers, along with the chemistry and curing kinetics of polybenzoxazines. The unique properties of polybenzoxazines originate from their hydrogen-bonded structures. The second objective of this book is to furnish detailed information on the syntheses and properties of various polybenzoxazines prepared from different monomers. They are categorised mainly into two types; firstly, the benzoxazine monomers containing additional crosslinking groups such as maleimide, nitrile, propargyl, acetylene, furan etc. The other is based on monomers synthesised from different phenols and amines of varying backbone structures. The third objective of this book is to elaborate the preparation and properties of the modified polybenzoxazines such as their blends and nanocomposites. The final objective of this book is to provide specific information on the degradation chemistry of polybenzoxazines under thermal, photochemical and chemical environments. The potential areas of application of these polymer systems are highlighted. This volume is intended to be a quick reference to researchers from the academia and industries on polybenzoxazine science.

Summary : The legacy of Leo Hendrik Baekeland and his development of phenol formal- hyde resins are recognized as the cornerstone of the Plastics Industry in the early twentieth century, and phenolic resins continue to ?ourish after a century of robust growth. On July 13, 1907, Baekeland ?led his “heat and pressure” patent related to the processing of phenol formaldehyde resins and identi?ed their unique utility in a plethora of applications. The year 2010 marks the Centennial Year of the prod- tion of phenolic resins by Leo Baekeland. In 1910, Baekeland formed Bakelite GmbH and launched the manufacture of phenolic resins in Erkner in May 1910. In October 1910, General Bakelite began producing resins in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Lastly, Baekeland collaborated with Dr. Takamine to manufacture phenolic resins in Japan in 1911. These events were instrumental in establishing the Plastics Industry and in tracing the identity to the brilliance of Dr. Leo Baekeland. Phenolic resins remain as a versatile resin system featuring either a stable, thermoplastic novolak composition that cures with a latent source of formaldehyde (hexa) or a heat reactive and perishable resole composition that cures thermally or under acidic or special basic conditions. Phenolic resins are a very large volume resin system with a worldwide volume in excess of 5 million tons/year, and its growth is related to the gross national product (GNP) growth rate globally.
