Summary : Aquaculture Mycology and Bacteriology is a practical reference to address the steadily increasing importance of infectious diseases of aquatic animals. With the burgeoning expansion of the animal aquaculture industry to new geographic areas, new microbial and parasitic species with pathogenic potential will continue to emerge. This necessitates rapid identification of the new pathogens to enable their control. Each pathogenic bacterial or fungal species is accompanied by the full description of both taxonomic and clinical information for the three major aquatic food animals (fish, crustaceans and mollusks). The book takes a comprehensive approach to facilitate research to develop vaccines or other similar pathogen mitigation measures, and is useful to bacteriologists, mycologists, aquaculturists, clinical practitioners in aquatic animal health and all those in industry, government or academia who are interested in aquaculture, fisheries and comparative biology. Identifies bacteria susceptibility to specific fungus and pathogens affecting aquatic food supply Includes all known bacterial and fungal pathogens that affect fish, crustaceans and mollusks Offers prevention and disease control measures of aquatic animal bacterial and fungal pathogens Includes fungal identification and classifications to help examine features of different fungal groups

Summary : In 1994, world aquaculture production reached 25.5 million mt, valued at US$ 39.83 billion. Asia contributed 89.9% of this total, and has since continued to dominate global production. The drive to produce more fish and shellfish to meet the growing demand has lead many aquaculturists in Asia to intensify their operations. In many instances, the complex balance between the fish/shellfish and the environment is not well understood, the organism under culture subsequently becoming stressed and prone to infections. As we have already witnessed, disease has been and will continue to be a major constraint to the development of the aquaculture industry. Considering the FAO's priority on developing sustainable aquaculture, the large Asian contribution to global aquaculture production and the seemingly high losses of revenue due to diseases and health-related problems, FAO, in consultation with the Network of Aquaculture Centres in the Asia-Pacific (NACA), the Aquatic Animal Health Research Institute (AAHRI), the South East Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) and the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM), and in collaboration with the Fish Health Section of the Asian Fisheries Society (FHS/AFS), organized a Regional Expert Consultation on Aquaculture Health Management in Asia and the Pacific, which was held at the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in Serdang, Malaysia in May 1995. This document comprises the technical papers presented at the Consultation, and is a supplement to the report of the consultation, FAO Fisheries Report No. 529.

Summary : Fungi and microbes have predominant influence in our lives. They are directly or indirectly involved in generating the food we eat and drink, besides providing life saving pharmaceutical products, including the sources of enzymes. They play a vital role in recycling of organic matter and several ecological processes. Both fungi and microbes have contributed several billion dollars worth of technological products. For instance: yeast is used in brewing and bakery, Lactobacillus ferments milk to yoghurt and a number of edible mushrooms are rich in nutrients besides possessing many medicinal properties. Bacteria and fungi serve as key organisms in understanding life processes, genetic engineering and as experimental organisms. Therefore, it is necessary to study the biology and biotechnology of these organisms. It is a humble attempt of the authors to make the readers understand the biology and biotechnology of fungi and microbes in a simpler way and also to communicate the recent developments.

Summary : This comprehensive manual of phytobacteriology is heavily illustrated with over 200 colour photographs and line illustrations. It begins by outlining the history and science of bacteriology and gives an overview of the diversity and versatility of complex bacteria. It then explains the characterization, identification and naming of complex bacteria, and explores how bacteria can cause disease and how plants react to such disease. The book also discusses the economic importance of bacterial diseases as well as strategies for their control and the reduction of crop losses. It concludes with fifty examples of plant pathogenic bacteria and the diseases that they cause.

Summary : Aquaculture Pharmacology is a reliable, up-to-date, "all inclusive" reference and guide that provides an understanding of practical drug information for the aquaculture industry. This book covers the sources, chemical properties, and mechanisms of action of drugs, and the biological systems upon which they act. It covers various drug interactions, therapeutic uses of drugs, as well as legal considerations within the industry as a whole. It presents the four main groups of drugs used in fish, crustaceans and molluscs and includes disinfectants, antimicrobial drugs, antiparasitic agents, and anesthetics, and identifies areas where more research is needed to generate more knowledge to support a sustainable aquaculture industry. With the burgeoning international aquaculture expansion and expanding global trade in live aquatic animals and their products this book is useful to bacteriologists, mycologists, aquaculturists, clinical practitioners in aquatic animal health and all those in industry, government or academia who are interested in aquaculture, fisheries and comparative biology. Presents clinical information for the three major aquatic food animals (fish, crustaceans and molluscs) Facilitates research to develop vaccines or other similar pathogen mitigation measures Provides the latest advancements in the field including regulated pharmaceuticals for use in fisheries and aquaculture
