Summary : Atlas of Material Damage, Second Edition provides a systematic analysis of the modes of damage and morphology of damaged material, and compares the experiences of different industries to provide insight into the most frequently encountered failures, reasons for these failures, and potential improvements to prevent future materials failure. Product reliability is a critical aim of materials scientists and engineers. Uninterrupted performance of manufactured products at typical and extreme conditions of use is the major goal of product development and the most important indicator of material quality. This atlas has microscopic pictures, schematic diagrams, and graphs which show how materials fail, how they are produced to not fail, and how they are designed to perform particular functions to make outstanding products. Findings presented by each illustration are fully explained in the text and labeled. Materials increasingly must have optimal structure and specially designed morphology. The book offers numerous examples of how this special morphology can be achieved in electronics, the plastics industry, the pharmaceutical industry, aerospace, automotive applications, medicine, dentistry, and many other fields. This book provides information on defect formation and materials damage; discusses effect of composition, morphological features and structure of different materials on material performance, durability, and resilience; and analyses the cause of material damage and degradation, and the effect of processing conditions on material damage. Includes data and images for many material types, making this a hard-working reference guide for engineers working in a range of different market sectors Provides core data related to the field Explains the range of test and imaging techniques available, enabling engineers and scientists to take optimal and cost effective decisions Offers an essential tool for identifying material damage and implementing successful maintenance and replacement regimes

Summary : Atlas of Material Worlds is a highly designed narrative atlas illustrating the agency of nonliving materials with unique, ubiquitous, and often hidden influence on our daily lives. Employing new materialism as a jumping-off point, it examines the increasingly blurry lines between the organic and inorganic, engaging the following questions: What roles do nonliving materials play? Might a closer examination of those roles reveal an undeniable agency we have long overlooked or disregarded? If so, does this material agency change our understanding of the social structures, ecologies, economies, cosmologies, technologies, and landscapes that surround us? And, perhaps most importantly, why does material agency matter? This is the story of the world’s driest nonpolar desert, pink flamingos, and cerulean blue lithium ponds; industrial shipping logistics, pudding-like jiggling substrates, and monuments of mud; galactic bodies, radioactive sheep, and the yellowcake of uranium. Put simply, this book dares readers to see the world anew, from material up. Atlas of Material Worlds offers this new relationship to our host environment in a time of mounting crises—accelerating climate change, ballooning socioeconomic inequality, and rising toxic nationalism—uniquely telling materialist stories for practitioners and students in landscape, architecture, and other built environment disciplines.

Summary : This new, retitled, edition of Fibre Failure and Wear of Materials has been updated and expanded to include more examples from work at UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) in the 1990s and to take account of recent research elsewhere. It contains over 500 new micrographs to add to the 1,000 in the first edition and includes two new sections on forensic and medical studies. Based on over 25 years of research at UMIST, the book is concerned with how fibres fail under stress. Until comparatively recently little was known about the way in which fibres break. In this book about 20 different modes of fibre failure are examined. Case studies have been selected both from the traditional uses of textiles in clothing and in household products, such as sheets, towels and carpets and also from the study of failure in textile structures used in industry and engineering, for example seat belts and ropes. This unique collection of more than 1500 scanning electron micrographs and other pictures for identifying failure modes, together with the accompanying explanatory text, provides fibre scientists, polymer scientists and others working in textile research with a better understanding of fracture mechanisms. The book will also be of interest to forensic scientists and medical specialists using fibre implants. Finally, it will help textile technologists and design engineers to manufacture improved textile products and to use them in ways which will maximise their life span.

Summary : Atlas of Leaf Venation and Oil Gland Patterns in the Eucalypts is an aid to the identification of eucalypts in the field and a confirmation of the natural affinities between species and higher-level taxa on the basis of their comparative morphology. Its purpose is to standardise leaf venation and oil gland terminology and to demonstrate the taxonomic value of leaf venation and oil gland patterns within the eucalypts. The work discusses the visible features of the adult leaves of eucalypts as seen with reflected and transmitted light. Because venation and oil glands become obscure in dried specimens this work relies entirely on the comprehensive sampling and observation of fresh leaves. High quality, scaled, leaf venation images of vouchered specimens are used to compare all taxonomic groups in the eucalypts. All genera, sections, series and subseries are represented.

Summary : This RILEM AAR 1.2 Atlas is complementary to the petrographic method described in RILEM AAR 1.1. It is designed and intended to assist in the identification of alkali-reactive rock types in concrete aggregate by thin-section petrography. Additional issues include: • optical thin-section petrography conforming to RILEM AAR 1.1 is considered the prime assessment method for aggregate materials, being effective regarding cost and time. Unequivocal identification of minerals in very-fine grained rock types may however require use of supplementary methods. • the atlas adheres to internationally adopted schemes for rock classification and nomenclature, as recommended in AAR 1.1. Thus, rock types are classified as igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic based upon mineral content, microstructure and texture/fabric. • in addition, the atlas identifies known alkali-reactive silica types in each rock type presented. It also identifies consistent coincidence between certain lithologies and silica types; however, it refrains from attributing alkali-reactivity to a specific silica property or quality. • operator skill and experience remain essential for reliable assessment by thin-section petrography. • aggregate materials must be classified according to local criteria, based on regional experiences with ASR-damaged field structures and geology. Access to additional data may be relevant for the assessment of imported materials. • mere application of rock nomenclature does not provide any sort of warranty to the development of deleterious alkali-reaction. Such may result in either rejection of a suitable aggregate material, thus wasting a valuable resource, or acceptance of an unsuitable material leading to concrete damage, both of which are undesirable.
