Summary : I have known Beate Carriere for several years and have always been impressed by her deep understanding of the whole field of physiotherapy. In our discussions her questions and comments have been inspiring and demonstrate that her knowledge is not only based on reading but rather on life-long clinical practice and experience. Thus, it is no wonder that her book is excep tional, presenting the physiology, the pathophysiology, and a technical description of recommended exercises and their clinical application - and not as general recommendations but with con vincing examples. All three of the sections are written in clear, understandable language. The author discusses the use of the Swiss ball; however, she did not limit herself to a technical description. Instead she set out to discover the underlying physiological mechanisms and has succeeded in showing how a knowledgable physiotherapist can contribute to the development of physiotherapy as a science. Though based on the concept of S. Klein-Vogelbach, Beate Carriere has added so many of her own exercises, descriptions, and explanations that we are justified in speaking about the Carriere concept of using the Swiss ball. What I appreciate in particular is her critical view and attempt to see the patient and his problems from all possible aspects. Therefore, she does not consider the Swiss ball program the one and only means of treat ment but incorporates other approaches as well.

Summary : Intercollegiate football was played in Muncie, Indiana for the first time in 1924, when the Hoosieroons of Ball Teachers College played their first game against the Indiana State Normal School and their first home game against Central Normal College. The Hoosieroons became the Cardinals of Ball Teachers College in 1927, and then Ball State Teachers College in 1929, and finally Ball State University in 1965. Over the course of the next 75 years, Ball State's football program grew from essentially a small college enterprise to its present status as a respected member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and a participant in NCAA Division I football. The echoes of cheering fans can be heard, even in an empty stadium. Using over 200 vintage photos, E. Bruce Geelhoed explores how football grew and developed at Ball State University. Spanning from 1924, when Ball Teachers College was a branch campus of the Indiana State Normal School, to the present day when Ball State is a comprehensive regional university, this book tells the stories of the players, coaches, and traditions that characterize this American pastime in Indiana.

Summary : Academy Award-winning screenwriter of the film American Beauty and creator of the HBO series Six Feet Under, Alan Ball has consistently probed the cultural forces shaping gender, sexuality, and death in the United States. Through gritty dialogue and edgy humor, Ball centers much of his social critique on the illusory promises of the American Dream. For many of his characters, a belief in the American Dream—including idealized notions of the family, heterosexual norms, and the acceptance of prescribed gender roles—proves stifling and self-destructive. This is the first book to explore Ball’s writings for theater, television and film, with an emphasis on his best-known work. These essays offer insight into both the captivating and problematic dimensions of Ball’s work, while drawing connections among his diverse writings. An interview with Ball is included.

Summary : Over the last 20 years, international attempts to raise educational standards and improve opportunities for all children have accelerated and proliferated. This has generated a state of constant change and an unrelenting flood of initiatives, changes and reforms that need to be 'implemented' by schools. In response to this, a great deal of attention has been given to evaluating 'how well' policies are realised in practice – implemented! Less attention has been paid to understanding how schools actually deal with these multiple, and sometimes contradictory, policy demands; creatively working to interpret policy texts and translate these into practices, in real material conditions and varying resources – how they are enacted! Based on a long-term qualitative study of four 'ordinary' secondary schools, and working on the interface of theory with data, this book explores how schools enact, rather than implement, policy. It focuses on: contexts of 'policy work' in schools; teachers as policy subjects; teachers as policy actors; policy texts, artefacts and events; standards, behaviour and learning policies. This book offers an original and very grounded analysis of how schools and teachers do policy. It will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students of education, education policy and social policy, as well as school leaders, in the UK and beyond.

Unlike traditional baseball, the unique scoring system of miniature baseball allows you to play the game with as few as two people. Summary : Since early colonial times in America, Jewish southerners have been tempted by delectable regional foods. Because some of these foods - including pork and shellfish - have been traditionally forbidden to Jews by religious dietary laws, southern Jews face a special predicament. In a culinary journey through the Jewish South, Arkansas native Marcie Cohen Ferris explores how southern Jews embraced, avoided, and adapted southern food and, in the process, have found themselves at home. From colonial Savannah and Charleston to Civil War era New Orleans and Natchez, from New South Atlanta to contemporary Memphis and the Mississippi and Arkansas Deltas, examines the expressive power of food throughout southern Jewish history. Jews in the South reinvented traditions as they adjusted to living in a largely Christian world where they were bound by regional rules of race, class, and gender. In some cases, Jews merely adjusted their eating habits to match those of their new neighbors. In other cases, they created a new cuisine that revealed a merging of the many cultures they encountered in the New World. At the dining table, Jewish southerners created a distinctive religious expression that reflects the evolution of southern Jewish life. Featuring a trove of photographs, Matzoh Ball Gumbo also includes anecdotes, oral histories, and more than thirty recipes to try at home. Ferris's rich tour of southern Jewish food ways helps us answer the question, ''What does it mean to be both southern and Jewish?''

Summary : This book is written for the aficionados of pocket billiards, the weekly recreational & league players, the Pro-players, the action players, and even the actor players, playing players in movies or TV shows. We must also include the backbone of pocket and carom billiards. A most unlikely group of people that play pool so casually that they don’t even consider themselves as players. It is just something to do while waiting for something else to happen. These billiard characters reside in the mysterious back corners of my mind. Over the last few years they kept driving me, at odd hours to, “go ahead Doc, write it down, don’t let our billiard knowledge just die out and fritter away”. I listened. To list all these players, writers, supporters and industry suppliers that influenced me is not practical, but they were all subconsciously urging me on. Some were mere shadows of memories or ghosts flickering through the murky mental back roads. All had a part in this. God bless them all for those parts that they played.

Summary : Down comes a deluge of sonorous hail, Or prone-descending rain. Wide-rent, the clouds Pour a whole flood, and yet, its flame unquenched, Th’unconquerable lightning struggles through. Ragged and fierce, or in red whirling balls, And fires the mountains with redoubled rage. Black from the stroke, above, the smould’ring pine Stands a sad shattered trunk; and, stretched below, A lifeless group the blasted cattle lie. James Thompson, “The Seasons” (1727) have been investigating ball lightning for more than two decades. I published a ball lightning report in Nature in 1976 that received worldwide publicity and I consequently many people wrote to me with accounts of their own experiences. Within a very short time, I had accumulated about 200 firsthand accounts, and the file has continued to grow steadily since then. Several things impressed me. Few of those who wrote to me had any detailed foreknowledge of ball lightning at the time of their observation. Nonetheless, once reports of other phenomena such as St. Elmo’s fire had been eliminated, the remaining descriptions were remarkably consistent. Furthermore, nearly all who contacted me were keen to have an explanation of what they had seen and seemed entirely sincere.

Summary : Unexpected, quirky and provocative, BALL & Other Funny Stories About Cancer is a unique collection of performances about illness and the changing body over time. Documenting a trilogy of Brian Lobel’s monologue performances from 2001-2011, this collection challenges the inspirational stories of survivors and martyrs that have come before, infusing the ‘cancer story’ with an urgency and humour which is sometimes inappropriate, often salacious and always, above all else, honest and open. Published together for the first time, this collection of performances goes beyond the chemotherapy to include reflections on politics, sexuality and gender, providing cancer – and cancer narratives – with a much-deserved kick in the ball(s).
