Summary : One of the most significant features of the Fourth Gospel is its unique version of the crucifixion of Jesus (19:12-42). A full understanding of the central section of this scene, the depiction of Jesus' death and the details immediately surrounding (19:31-37), depends on the interpretation of the verse that recounts the piercing of his side and the flow of blood and water (19:34). Yet, there has never been a clear consensus as to the meaning of this verse. This difficulty is not insurmountable, as the solution becomes apparent when one lends an attentive ear to the voice of the narrator. The event described in verse 34 is explicitly declared by the narrator in verse 37 to be the fulfillment of a "Scripture passage" that says, "They shall look at him whom they have pierced." It is, therefore, to that Scripture, Zechariah 12:10, that the author directs his audience for the meaning of this occurrence, and it is then from the literary context of the Zechariah passage that we can come to understand better this Gospel's account of the death of Jesus.

Summary : "Jay needed so many things. He needed Maia to be well. He needed a cure for both of them. He needed the world to somehow start making sense again. Above everything, he needed someone to tell him why these terrible things were happening to him." Seventeen-year-old Jay Harris lives in a world struck down by a deadly virus. His parents are dead, along with half the planet. When Jay's sister Maia falls ill, he must find a cure before he loses her, too. But unbeknownst to Maia, Jay is also sick... and he's running out of time to save them both. When Jay's friends tell him there might be a cure for him in France, he must decide whether to pursue it. The journey will be difficult and dangerous, especially in his weakened state, but with little time left-for himself and for Maia-it soon becomes clear there's no other choice. Jay leaves the relative comfort of London to search for help, knowing he may never find it. Along the way, he experiences the effects of disaster on the bonds of friendship and fluctuating notions of family. These teens, decimated by a dangerous plague, face stark choices in their search for help, not knowing if their efforts will end in loss and pain. Will Jay and Maia find a cure before the virus takes them?

Summary : The Indus basin was once an arid pastoral watershed, but by the second half of the twentieth century, it had become one of the world's most heavily irrigated and populated river basins. Launched under British colonial rule in the nineteenth century, this irrigation project spurred political, social, and environmental transformations that continued after the 1947 creation of the new states of India and Pakistan. In this first large-scale environmental history of the region, David Gilmartin focuses on the changes that occurred in the basin as a result of the implementation of the world's largest modern integrated irrigation system. This masterful work of scholarship explores how environmental transformation is tied to the creation of communities and nations, focusing on the intersection of politics, statecraft, and the environment.

Summary : The sacrificial death of Jesus Christ is the most important and cherished event in human history. Still, the accurate cause of how Jesus died remains a mystery to this day. Dr. Gary Hassmann relies on his years of experience as a physician and surgeon to utilize his findings gathered from three decades of extensive scriptural studies, medical research, and pilgrimages to the Holy Land and Rome to unravel and solve the mystery of how Jesus died. By shining a fresh light on the prophetic scriptures, the transcendence of blood and water, the effects of the Christ event such as redemption and reconciliation, and a new perspective collected from the twenty-first century medical sciences, Dr. Hassmann invites others to contemplate a fascinating theory about Christs death and ultimately glean more robust spiritual truths about Gods meaning and prophetic messages. Blood and Water presents original research of the sacred scriptures and the modern medical sciences that faithfully and thoughtfully deciphers and solves the mystery of how Jesus died.

Summary : A brutal murder in a small Maritime fishing community raises urgent questions of right and wrong, and even the nature of good and evil, in this masterfully told true story. In June 2013, three upstanding citizens of a small Cape Breton town cold-bloodedly murdered their neighbour, Phillip Boudreau, at sea. While out checking their lobster traps, two Landry cousins and skipper Dwayne Samson saw Boudreau in his boat, the Midnight Slider, about to vandalize their lobster traps. Like so many times before, Boudreau was about to cost them thousands of dollars out of their seasonal livelihood. One man took out a rifle and fired four shots at Boudreau and his boat. To finish the job, they rammed their own larger boat over the top of his speedboat. Boudreau's body was never found. Then they completed the day's fishing and went home to Petit de Grat on Isle Madame. Boudreau was a Cape Breton original--an inventive small-time criminal who had terrorized and entertained Petit de Grat for two decades. He had been in prison for nearly half his adult life. He was funny and frightening, loathed, loved, and feared. One neighbour says he would "steal the beads off Christ's moccasins"--then give the booty away to someone in need. He would taunt his victims, and threaten them with arson if they reported him. He was accused of one attempted rape. Meanwhile the police and the Fisheries officers were frustrated, cowed, and hobbled by shrinking budgets. Boudreau seemed invincible, a miscreant who would plague the village forever. Cameron, a resident of the area since 1971, argues that the Boudreau killing was a direct reaction to credible and dire threats that the authorities were powerless to neutralize. As many local people have said, if those fellows hadn't killed him, someone else would have. Like Say Nothing, The Perfect Storm, The Golden Spruce, and Into Thin Air, this book offers a dramatic narrative set in a unique, lovingly drawn setting, where a story about one small community has universal resonance. This is a story not about lobster, but about the grand themes of power and law, security and self-respect. It raises a disturbing question: Are there times when taking the law into your own hands is not only understandable but the responsible thing to do?

Summary : Jack Flynn's Blood in the Water is an edge-of-the-seat ride in a roller coaster, action-packed thriller with international terrorism at its core and family at its heart. Boston is in the grip of the coldest winter on record, but in its criminal underworld the temperature is rising. Harbor chief Cormack O’Connell has lived his life close to the wire – above and below the law. He knows every movement on his waterfront, and that's why someone wants him out of the way, fast. Homeland security agent Kit Steele is committed to avenge terrorism. Also known as The Hunter, she’s got her eye on the prize. This time it’s personal, and she has nothing left to lose. Her prey is Vincente Carpio, one of the world’s most dangerous criminals. He is clever, calculating and he's biding his time. Diamond O’Connell is a daughter, a lover and a fighter. She’s seen things most nineteen-year-old girls couldn’t even begin to imagine. And she’s about to become a pawn in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Everyone has their part to play, but now it seems that there are much darker, far-reaching forces at work which look to be preparing for the international stage.
