Summary : A guide to the pandemic economy: essential reading about the long-term implications of our current crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has unleashed a firehose of information (much of it wrong) and an avalanche of opinions (many of them ill-founded). Most of us are so distracted by the everyday awfulness that we don't see the broader issues in play. In this book, economist Joshua Gans steps back from the short-term chaos to take a clear and systematic look at how economic choices are being made in response to COVID-19. He shows that containing the virus and pausing the economy—without letting businesses fail and people lose their jobs—are the necessary first steps.

Summary : In a gripping, accessible narrative, a veteran science journalist lays out the shocking story of how the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic happened and how to make sure this never happens again Over the last 30 years of epidemics and pandemics, we learned nearly every lesson needed to stop this coronavirus outbreak in its tracks. We heeded almost none of them. The result is a pandemic on a scale never before seen in our lifetimes. In this captivating, authoritative, and eye-opening book, science journalist Debora MacKenzie lays out the full story of how and why it happened: the previous viruses that should have prepared us, the shocking public health failures that paved the way, the failure to contain the outbreak, and most importantly, what we must do to prevent future pandemics. Debora MacKenzie has been reporting on emerging diseases for more than three decades, and she draws on that experience to explain how COVID-19 went from a potentially manageable outbreak to a global pandemic. Offering a compelling history of the most significant recent outbreaks, including SARS, MERS, H1N1, Zika, and Ebola, she gives a crash course in Epidemiology 101--how viruses spread and how pandemics end--and outlines the lessons we failed to learn from each past crisis. In vivid detail, she takes us through the arrival and spread of COVID-19, making clear the steps that governments knew they could have taken to prevent or at least prepare for this. Looking forward, MacKenzie makes a bold, optimistic argument: this pandemic might finally galvanize the world to take viruses seriously. Fighting this pandemic and preventing the next one will take political action of all kinds, globally, from governments, the scientific community, and individuals--but it is possible. No one has yet brought together our knowledge of COVID-19 in a comprehensive, informative, and accessible way. But that story can already be told, and Debora MacKenzie's urgent telling is required reading for these times and beyond. It is too early to say where the COVID-19 pandemic will go, but it is past time to talk about what went wrong and how we can do better.

Summary : The global response to the Covid-19 pandemic is the greatest science policy failure in a generation. We knew this was coming. Warnings about the threat of a new pandemic have been made repeatedly since the 1980s and it was clear in January that a dangerous new virus was causing a devastating human tragedy in China. And yet the world ignored the warnings. Why? In this short and hard-hitting book, Richard Horton, editor of the medical journal The Lancet, scrutinizes the actions that governments around the world took – and failed to take – as the virus spread from its origins in Wuhan to the global pandemic that it is today. He shows that many Western governments and their scientific advisors made assumptions about the virus and its lethality that turned out to be mistaken. Valuable time was lost while the virus spread unchecked, leaving health systems unprepared for the avalanche of infections that followed. Drawing on his own scientific and medical expertise, Horton outlines the measures that need to be put in place, at both national and international levels, to prevent this kind of catastrophe from happening again. We’re supposed to be living in an era where human beings have become the dominant influence on the environment, but Covid-19 has revealed the fragility of our societies and the speed with which our systems can come crashing down. We need to learn the lessons of this pandemic and we need to learn them fast because the next pandemic may arrive sooner than we think.

Summary : Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Economy - Health Economics, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Europe has became the new epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the WHO on 13th March 2020. Sums and ratios of death and confirmed cases were reported daily, however, such statistics vary significantly by country and it is therefore challenging to understand and measure the risk and severity of the novel disease. Prior to the European outbreak, the COVID-19 virus infected more than 80,000 people in China since late 2019 and took the life of several thousands during the past few months. In this paper, a 3-state model Markov model is applied on the data from China to study the dynamics of the disease and the impact of containment strategies. The long-run stable transition probability obtained from the Markov model provides a convenient approach to estimate the case fatality rate of the COVID-19. Also, the estimated life expectancy give a reasonable estimate of time between first symptom and death. Considering the containment strategy implemented in China, the analysis is done for Hubei province and the rest of China respectively. Comparison of daily estimated results over the whole observation period highlight the impact of the strategy while supporting the measures and controls in place. The proposed Markov model produce reasonable and intuitive estimates that help to measure the virulence of the disease and understand the prevalence overtime. While uncertainty persists as the pandemic goes on, our results show that the Markov approaches provide a useful tool for prognosis and epidemic control.

As the new budgetary year starts, the Coronavirus has tainted over a million people above 200 nations a scourge defying the entirety of humankind. It affects ways of life, organizations, economies, and the supposition of regular prosperity that we all have to a great extent underestimated. Indeed, even before the beginning of this pandemic, the worldwide economy was going up against choppiness by interruptions in exchange streams and weakened development. The circumstance has now been bothered by the interest, flexibly and liquidity stuns that COVID-19 has dispensed. When the pandemic is controlled, the shape and speed of the recuperation in the U.S. what is more, China will among the key variables deciding the nature and footing of worldwide monetary recuperation. It is our desire as of now that the course of monetary recuperation in India will be smoother and quicker than that of numerous other propelled nations.

Summary : Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Analysis and modelling of the daily observations is of the interest for both academic and practical needs during the worst public health crisis in decades. In this paper we propose a Boosting-based Quantile Autoregressive Tree (BQART) model to estimate the evolution in reported cases and fatality of the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed approach benefit from the boosting methodology and the additive quantile regression to overcome challenges of unknown probabilistic distribution in the autoregressive variable and location shift in the observed data. The simple additive structure and binary autoregressive tree representation further improve the interpretability of the model and help to clearly illustrate the results. The estimated results for the USA and Singapore were discussed in details with more results for other countries in the appendix. While the shape and structure of estimated trees represent the autoregressive properties observed in the data, the model output helps to demonstrate improved accuracy in time series forecasting and analysis. These results should encourage the use of machine learning based tree ensembles in time-series modelling where model performance and interpretability is sought.
