Summary : What does a country's television programming say about its deep character, beliefs, dreams and fears? Here, Tasha G. Oren recounts the volatile history of Israeli television and aiming to reveal the history of the nation itself. television became the object of fantasies and anxieties that went to the heart of Israel's most pressing concerns: Arab-Israeli relations, immigration and the forging of a modern Israeli. Television broadcasting was aimed toward external relations - the flow of messages across borders, Arab-Israeli conflict, and the shaping of public opinion worldwide - as much as it was toward internal needs and interests. Through archival research and analysis of public scandals and early programmes, Oren traces Israeli television's transformation from a feared agent of decadence to a powerful national communication tool, and eventally, to a vastly popular entertainment medium.

Summary : What is life? For generations, scientists have struggled to make sense of this fundamental question, for life really does look like magic: even a humble bacterium accomplishes things so dazzling that no human engineer can match it. Huge advances in molecular biology over the past few decades have served only to deepen the mystery. In this penetrating and wide-ranging book, world-renowned physicist and science communicator Paul Davies searches for answers in a field so new and fast-moving that it lacks a name; it is a domain where biology, computing, logic, chemistry, quantum physics, and nanotechnology intersect. At the heart of these diverse fields, Davies explains, is the concept of information: a quantity which has the power to unify biology with physics, transform technology and medicine, and force us to fundamentally reconsider what it means to be alive—even illuminating the age-old question of whether we are alone in the universe. From life’s murky origins to the microscopic engines that run the cells of our bodies, The Demon in the Machine journeys across an astounding landscape of cutting-edge science. Weaving together cancer and consciousness, two-headed worms and bird navigation, Davies reveals how biological organisms garner and process information to conjure order out of chaos, opening a window onto the secret of life itself.

Summary : Chapters in this book include trick photography, chronophotography and the projection of motion pictures. We find here evidence of the popularity and connections between magic and photography at the turn of the century, which is depicted effectively in the recent movie The Illusionist. Of course, the first photographers, such as Louis Daguerre, were magicians and masters of stage illusions.

Summary : A pathbreaking history of how participants in the slave trade influenced the growth and dissemination of medical knowledge As the slave trade brought Europeans, Africans, and Americans into contact, diseases were traded along with human lives. Manuel Barcia examines the battle waged against disease, where traders fought against loss of profits while enslaved Africans fought for survival. Although efforts to control disease and stop epidemics from spreading brought little success, the medical knowledge generated by people on both sides of the conflict contributed to momentous change in the medical cultures of the Atlantic world.

Summary : This thesis presents a general theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics for information processing. Ever since Maxwell's demon was proposed in the nineteenth century, the relationship between thermodynamics and information has attracted much attention because it concerns the foundation of the second law of thermodynamics. From the modern point of view, Maxwell's demon is formulated as an information processing device that performs measurement and feedback at the level of thermal fluctuations. By unifying information theory, measurement theory, and the recently developed theory of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, the author has constructed a theory of "information thermodynamics," in which information contents and thermodynamic variables are treated on an equal footing. In particular, the maximum work that can be extracted by the demon and the minimum work that is needed for measurement and information erasure by the demon has been determined. Additionally, generalizations of nonequilibrium relations such as a Jarzynski equality for classical stochastic systems in the presence of feedback control have been derived. One of the generalized equalities has recently been verified experimentally by using sub-micron colloidal particles. The results obtained serve as fundamental principles for information processing in small thermodynamic systems, and are applicable to nanomachines and nanodevices.

Summary : A self-organizing controller is developed for a simplified two-dimensional aircraft model. The controller learns how to pilot the aircraft through a navigational mission without exceeding pre-established position and velocity limits. The controller pilots the aircraft by activating one of eight directional actuators at all times. By continually monitoring the aircraft's position and velocity with respect to the mission, the controller progressively modifies its decision rules to improve the aircraft's performance. When the controller has learned how to pilot the aircraft, two actuators fail permanently. Despite this malfunction, the controller regains proficiency at its original task. The experimental results reported show the controller's capabilities foe self-organizing control, learning, and malfunction recovery.
