Summary : This book provides a detailed overview of ultrasound imaging of sport-related injuries of the lower extremity. The available literature focuses mainly on either clinical aspects or all imaging modalities and clinical aspects of sport-related pathologies, with little relevance on ultrasound. Indeed, recent advances in ultrasound technology, including high resolution, electronic, broadband transducers, have led to improved assessment of the musculoskeletal system, and ultrasound is now considered an optimal imaging technique to evaluate musculoskeletal sport-related injuries. Its advantages include the ability to perform dynamic examinations essential for many diagnoses, such as intrasheath instability of the peroneal tendons. Drawing on the author’s over 30 years of experience in clinical praxis, this book highlights the great potential of the ultrasonographic evaluation of sports-related injuries and is entirely devoted to this technique. Similar to the two previous monographs by the same author, the book has the form of an atlas-text, with a wealth of high-quality ultrasound images and schemes – a structure that has proved particularly effective for learning, especially for younger physicians. Ultrasonography of the lower extremity: sport-related injuries combines the interests of various specialists, including radiologists, physiatrists, orthopedists, rheumatologists, and ultrasound technicians.

Summary : Fully master the basic principles and applications of abdominal ultrasound Designed to be kept close at hand during an actual ultrasound examination, Abdominal Ultrasound: Step by Step, second edition, provides the tools, techniques and training to increase your knowledge and confidence in interpreting ultrasound findings. Its clear, systematic approach shows you how to recognize all important ultrasound phenomena (especially misleading artifacts), locate and delineate the upper abdominal organs, explain suspicious findings, apply clinical correlations, and easily distinguish between normal and abnormal images. This second edition includes the new Sono Consultant, a systematic, two-part framework for helping the examiner evaluate specific ultrasound findings and make an informed differential diagnosis. In the first part, Ultrasound Findings, the examiner notes an abnormality at ultrasound, lists all findings, and suggests possible interpretations. In the second section, Clinical Presentation, the examiner starts off with a possible diagnosis (e.g. heart failure, splenomegaly) and then extracts the maximum possible information available on ultrasound to confirm, support, or differentiate the diagnosis. Features: More than 670 ultrasound images and 240 drawings that enhance the text 3-D diagrams that depict complex anatomical structures and spatial relationships Clear and concise learning units for easy mastery of material Providing a logical, structured foundation for performing a successful ultrasound examination, this practice-oriented teaching guide is essential for all students and residents building their skills in ultrasonography.

Summary : Most books on imaging in sports medicine are concerned with the particular joints or anatomy involved in sports-related injuries. This book, however, takes a different perspective by looking at injuries that are associated with specific sports. All of the well-known major sports, such as football, tennis, and basketball, are included, as are many less common but still very popular sports, such as baseball, American football, and rugby. The chapters on sports-specific injuries are preceded by two chapters on the perspective of clinicians and another two chapters on the general use of MR imaging and ultrasound in sports medicine. The authors of the book are world-renowned experts from five continents. Imaging in Sports-Specific Musculoskeletal Injuries should be of great interest to radiologists, sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, and rehabilitation physicians, and to anyone interested in the treatment of sports-related injuries.

Summary : The nutrition of an individual during gestation and the first two years of life—the first 1,000 days—sets the stage for lifelong health. Nutrition quality and quantity in this period can influence the risk of developing diseases that constitute today’s epidemics. Early-life nutrition can program the body’s tissues, organ structure and function, and metabolic and immunologic responses. These factors impact growth, development and cognition, and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, allergies and obesity. The first part of Early Nutrition and Long-Term Health examines the mechanisms by which early nutrition affects the risk of developing these conditions. The second part of this book reviews specific non-communicable diseases (NCDs) associated with early nutrition. The third part discusses the effects of nutritional programming from fetal life to toddlerhood. Prevention of over- or undernutrition in early life, rather than dietary, behavioral or therapeutic interventions in later life, is likely to have a greater return on society’s investment in coping with the modern epidemic of NCDs. Examines the relation between early life nutrition and long-term health Covers the mechanistic aspects of nutritional programming and its impact on risk of chronic non-communicable diseases Reviews associations between infant and child diet and its effect on growth, development, cognition and later occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, allergies, metabolic conditions and obesity

Summary : Climate change is one of the most important environmental problems faced by Planet Earth. The majority of CO2 emissions come from burning fossil fuels for energy production and improvements in energy efficiency shows the greatest potential for any single strategy to abate global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the energy sector. Energy related emissions account for almost 80% of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions. The building sector is the largest energy user responsible for about 40% of the EU’s total final energy consumption. In Europe the number of installed air conditioning systems has increased 500% over the last 20 years, but in that same period energy cooling needs have increased more than 20 times. The increase in energy cooling needs relates to the current higher living and working standards. In urban environments with low outdoor air quality (the general case) this means that in summer-time one cannot count on natural ventilation to reduce cooling needs. Do not forget the synergistic effect between heat waves and air pollution which means that outdoor air quality is worse in the summer aggravating cooling needs. Over the next few years this phenomenon will become much worse because more people will live in cities, more than 2 billion by 2050 and global warming will aggravate cooling needs. An overview of materials to lessen the impact of urban heat islands Excellent coverage of building materials to reduce air condtioning needs Innovative products discussed such as Thermo and Electrochromic materials
