Summary : One of the most influential voices in contemporary theology delivers “a deeply original, meticulously written” new approach to the way we think about God (Jack Miles, author of God: A Biography). In this long-awaited work, Ray L. Hart offers a radical speculative theology that profoundly challenges classical understandings of the divine. God Being Nothing contests the conclusions of numerous orthodoxies through a probing question: How can thinking of God reach closure when the subjects of creation are themselves unfinished, when God’s self-revelation in history is ongoing, and when the active manifestation of God is still occurring? A renowned theologist and author of the landmark text Unfinished Man and the Imagination, Ray L. Hart now asks us to imagine God perpetually in process: an unfinished God being self-created from nothingness. Breaking away from the traditional focus on divine persons, Hart reimagines the Trinity in terms of theogony, cosmogony, and anthropogony in order to reveal an ever-emerging Godhead who encompasses all of temporal creation and, within it, human existence. In Hart’s stunning vision, God’s continual generation from nothing manifests the full actualization of freedom: the freedom to create ex nihilo.

Summary : God Owes Us Nothing reflects on the centuries-long debate in Christianity: how do we reconcile the existence of evil in the world with the goodness of an omnipotent God, and how does God's omnipotence relate to people's responsibility for their own salvation or damnation. Leszek Kolakowski approaches this paradox as both an exercise in theology and in revisionist Christian history based on philosophical analysis. Kolakowski's unorthodox interpretation of the history of modern Christianity provokes renewed discussion about the historical, intellectual, and cultural omnipotence of neo-Augustinianism. "Several books a year wrestle with that hoary conundrum, but few so dazzlingly as the Polish philosopher's latest."—Carlin Romano, Washington Post Book World "Kolakowski's fascinating book and its debatable thesis raise intriguing historical and theological questions well worth pursuing."—Stephen J. Duffy, Theological Studies "Kolakowski's elegant meditation is a masterpiece of cultural and religious criticism."—Henry Carrigan, Cleveland Plain Dealer

Summary : Meister Eckhart, a now-popular medieval German mystic, provides the contemporary person with a way of living that centers on nothing but God in everyday life. He insists that everyone—whatever they have done, whatever they believe—is one with God. Because of this, the good Meister sees no opposition between our spiritual and daily lives. We access oneness with God through letting go. Bliss and freedom flow from giving birth to this divine oneness right where we are. This book intends to help us live this everyday mysticism by prayer and letting go. Meister Eckhart invites all of us to realize our divine oneness in the midst of raising a family, commuting, doing our jobs, cooking, cleaning, and scheduling. Meister Eckhart preaches that God is one with every one of us in our everyday lives.

Summary : Contrary to popular opinion, God is not a Supreme Being, but the exact opposite — Absolute Nothingness. In fact, the entire reason that people suffer is because they are attached to 'being', and fail to understand that Non-being is the very basis of existence itself. In the immortal words of the Tao Te Ching, "All things are born of being; being is born of Nothingness." Nothingness is not barren oblivion, nor the opposite of life and 'being'; rather, it is the creative, fertile, and boundless principle that serves as the source and ground of beingness itself. Empty and vast, Nothingness is pregnant with limitless potential and fecundity. In theistic terms, Nothingness is God. Rooted in the teachings of the world's greatest sages, such as Lao Tzu, the Buddha, Adi Shankaracarya, Meister Eckhart, and Nisargadatta Maharaj, "God is Nothingness" explores how Non-being is indeed the root of all existence. Even more valuably, the book reveals how to actually awaken to Nothingness—how to realize God.

Summary : This is a fascinating and powerful autobiographical interview of one of the most prominent and outspoken Cardinals appointed by Pope Francis. The biography alone is inspirational. But Cardinal Sarah’s commentary on Christian living in the modern world and his response to the controversial issues of the day—including the upcoming ordinary Synod of Bishops—are profound and invigorating. Robert Sarah is the only son of a convert Catholic couple who lived in a remote village of Guinea, West Africa. Inspired by the zeal of the Spiritan missionary priests who made great sacrifices to bring the Faith to Africans in the most neglected regions, his parents became Catholics. Robert discerned a call to the priesthood and entered the local seminary, but due to the oppression of the Church by the Communist dictator of Guinea, he had to continue his studies in France and then in nearby Senegal. He was appointed Archbishop of Conakry, Guinea by John Paul II, becoming the youngest Bishop in the Catholic Church. His predecessor had been imprisoned by the Communist regime for several years, and Archbishop Sarah himself—because of his refusal to be coopted by the President—was at the top of the governments list for assassination when John Paul II called him to Rome to be Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to be the Prefect of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum. Here is a sample of his commentary on current issues of the day: “The idea of putting Magisterial teaching in a beautiful display case while separating it from pastoral practice, which then could evolve along with circumstances, fashions and passions, is a sort of heresy, a dangerous schizophrenic pathology. I therefore solemnly state that the Church in Africa is staunchly opposed to any rebellion against the teaching of Jesus and of the Magisterium . . . The Church of Africa is committed in the name of the Lord Jesus to keeping unchanged the teaching of God and of the Church about the indissolubility of marriage: what God has joined, let no man put asunder. How could a Synod go back on the constant teaching that was unified and explained in greater depth by Blessed Paul VI, Saint John Paul II and Benedict XVI?" -Cardinal Robert Sarah

Summary : Everyone gets "down to nothing" at some point in life, whether in relationships, finances, vision and courage for the future, physical or emotional exhaustion, or disappointment with God--everybody at some time comes to the end of their rope. It's exactly at those points that God does His best work. When we're down to nothing, God is up to something--truths to teach us, answers to satisfy us, assurance to bolster us, resources to supply us, or directions to guide us. In this book, Robert Schuller chronicles a particularly dark period in his life and shares with the reader what he learned God was up to in his relationsips, meeting his needs like health and finances, providing guidance in his emotional life, but most of all, in learning to know and trust God more.
