Summary : “In wildness is the preservation of the world,” wrote Thoreau in his iconic deathbed essay “Walking.” Celebrates the bicentennial of Thoreau’s birth in 1817. This summation of his life’s work, published posthumously in 1862, became a seminal influence in the modern environmental movement and is no less relevant today than 150 years ago. “Above all, we cannot afford not to live in the present,” he wrote. He extolled walking as a delightful and necessary idleness, an antidote to the burdens of civilization, a means of immersing ourselves in nature and awakening to the moment. “Walking” is recognized by most scholars as Thoreau’s “other” masterpiece, Walden in a more concise form. In the introduction of this edition, Adam Tuchinsky accessibly and engagingly unpacks the essay’s nineteenth-century associations, highlights the startling modernity of its sentiments, and reveals why Thoreau remains the towering figure in the history of American nature writing. Exquisite contemporary nature photographs curated by Denise Froehlich grace this handsome book. antique-looking paper B&W nature photos from Kurito Koichiro and other fine art photographers captioned with memorable lines from Thoreau’s writings.

Summary : In Beside You in Time Elizabeth Freeman expands biopolitical and queer theory by outlining a temporal view of the long nineteenth century. Drawing on Foucauldian notions of discipline as a regime that yoked the human body to time, Freeman shows how time became a social and sensory means by which people assembled into groups in ways that resisted disciplinary forces. She tracks temporalized bodies across many entangled regimes—religion, secularity, race, historiography, health, and sexuality—and examines how those bodies act in relation to those regimes. In analyses of the use of rhythmic dance by the Shakers; African American slave narratives; literature by Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, Herman Melville, and others; and how Catholic sacraments conjoined people across historical boundaries, Freeman makes the case for the body as an instrument of what she calls queer hypersociality. As a mode of being in which bodies are connected to others and their histories across and throughout time, queer hypersociality, Freeman contends, provides the means for subjugated bodies to escape disciplinary regimes of time and to create new social worlds.

Summary : Rituals of Ethnicity is a transnational study of the relationships between mobility, ethnicity, and ritual action. Through an ethnography of the Thangmi, a marginalized community who migrate between Himalayan border zones of Nepal, India, and the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, Shneiderman offers a new explanation for the persistence of enduring ethnic identities today despite the increasing realities of mobile, hybrid lives. She shows that ethnicization may be understood as a process of ritualization, which brings people together around the shared sacred object of identity. The first comprehensive ethnography of the Thangmi, Rituals of Ethnicity is framed by the Maoist-state civil conflict in Nepal and the movement for a separate state of Gorkhaland in India. The histories of individual nation-states in this geopolitical hotspot—as well as the cross-border flows of people and ideas between them—reveal the far-reaching and mutually entangled discourses of democracy, communism, development, and indigeneity that have transformed the region over the past half century. Attentive to the competing claims of diverse members of the Thangmi community, from shamans to political activists, Shneiderman shows how Thangmi ethnic identity is produced collaboratively by individuals through ritual actions embedded in local, national, and transnational contexts. She builds upon the specificity of Thangmi experiences to tell a larger story about the complexities of ethnic consciousness: the challenges of belonging and citizenship under conditions of mobility, the desire to both lay claim to and remain apart from the civil society of multiple states, and the paradox of self-identification as a group with cultural traditions in need of both preservation and development. Through deep engagement with a diverse, cross-border community that yearns to be understood as a distinctive, coherent whole, Rituals of Ethnicity presents an argument for the continued value of locally situated ethnography in a multisited world. Summary : Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand (1760–1834) regarded the Précis of the Lectures on Architecture (1802–5) and its companion volume, the Graphic Portion (1821), as both a basic course for future civil engineers and a treatise. Focusing the practice of architecture on utilitarian and economic values, he assailed the rationale behind classical architectural training: beauty, proportionality, and symbolism. His formal systematization of plans, elevations, and sections transformed architectural design into a selective modular typology in which symmetry and simple geometrical forms prevailed. His emphasis on pragmatic values, to the exclusion of metaphysical concerns, represented architecture as a closed system that subjected its own formal language to logical processes. Now published in English for the first time, the Précis and the Graphic Portion are classics of architectural education.

Summary : This book is an i nvitation to join the Common Good Nation. It is time to create a parallel nation based on a more mature worldview. Also, where anyone on Earth can easily join or leave it at any time because it is defined by agreement rather than geography. It is also time to create a more mature form of democracy. The geographically defined nations provide us the possibility of creating in the private sector a nation defined by agreement that can eventually become more important to people while they continue to be fully responsible as citizens of both. It is not 1776. It is 2017. Our human societies have matured. It is time to honor this maturation by providing the opportunity for people to join a nation that is based on our current level of human maturity. The Common Good Nation (CGN) you will herein be invited to join will be loved by the geographically nations. They will accurately view it as a free research and development program. Whatever it creates that works well can be copied or, if deemed best left in the private sector, supported with tax incentives. The CGN is based on people choosing their leaders from within groups of less than one hundred people where everyone knows everyone well. This puts an end to millions of people going to polls to choose between two people to be the President of their country where almost none know both well. It also ends campaign fundraising, marketing tricks, fake news, and all the other troubles with choosing leaders that way. It is also very difficult to reach a majority decision on an issue where the worldviews of the citizenry are all over the map. This is the result of primarily defining a nation by the land it occupies. More quick and wise decisions can be made when all the people in the nation share a particular worldview. The CGN described in this book is based on a particular worldview. Only those who share it will join. It will also use a more mature democratic process briefly described above. There is no taxation: except for a small annual fee to confirm a person as a citizen for the following year, all expenses are paid for with fees or donations. If you share its worldview and want to explore its use of a more mature form of democracy, we invite you to read this book and consider joining with us to create the CGN. You can do so by going to our website: www.commongoodnation.org.
