Summary : For eight decades the Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases has been the standard text from which most medical students and house ofcers have learned rheumatology. I myself will never forget thumbing through an older edition of the Primer as a second-year resident, while waiting to review a perplexing patient with my tutor. Fortunately the tutor was r- ning late with his own patients, so I had time to fip through the book – then much thinner – a couple of times. While turning the pages, per- ing the features of those diseases whose names were still exotic to me, and considering my patient’s history of conductive hearing loss and p- monary nodules, a light went on when I stumbled eventually on a part- ular chapter. I still remember the jaw-dropping efect on my tutor of my announcement then that I had a patient with Wegener’s granulomatosis. I think I became a rheumatologist that very moment! Subsequent editions of the Primer have sufered from the inevitable “obesity creep,” making it an outstanding reference textbook but virtually impossible to fip through quickly while awaiting one’s tutor, and even more difcult to slip into the pocket of a white coat to carry on rounds. For this reason we have created the Pocket Primer, a mini version that cuts the larger book down to its essentials.

Summary : Despite public perception, osteoporosis remains a widespread, devastating disease, and a very serious and costly public health threat. Early detection and treatment must be a priority for primary health care providers. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the principal x-ray technology used to diagnose osteoporosis in its early, asymptomatic stages, to assess treatment efficacy, and to guide treatment decisions. It remains the gold standard today. A DXA Primer for the Practicing Clinician: A Case-Based Manual for Understanding and Interpreting Bone Densitometry is developed around real cases of patients’ DXA measurements. The content is derived from presentations given by the authors at a national society training course and exemplifies not only the complete body of education provided through these lectures but the full range of previously undiscussed nuances as well. This practical, easy-to-read title provides the day to day problems of DXA usage that new users may encounter and that training courses do not have time to provide in detail. The central focus of the book is the presentation of what is normal and what is problematic in the use of DXA, depicting various scenarios with real case histories of patients, their corresponding DXA images and the data that explain the problems. Unique in approach and presentation, this case-based manual will be of immense value to all practitioners -- and students – interested in providing optimal diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.

Summary : This book provides a comprehensive clinical review of diagnostic and interventional applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound at the point-of-care. As more rheumatologists and other musculoskeletal providers in training and in practice learn the skill of musculoskeletal ultrasound, an increasing number of them will seek study materials for exam preparation and practical knowledge that apply to their clinical practice. Each chapter covers a standardized protocol of joint images with probe placement, and includes numerous examples of common ultrasound pathologies, clearly addressing what kind of pathology to look for with specific ultrasound image views. Review topics are emphasized, and study tools such as key-concept overviews, lists of important studies in the field, and extensive questions for self-assessment are included throughout. Because ultrasound training is moving toward becoming a mandatory part of rheumatology fellowship and has become mandatory in physical medicine and rehabilitation residencies, this book is a valuable educational resource for rheumatologists, physiatrists, and musculoskeletal providers seeking a practical review guide for preparation of certification exams and use in clinical practice.
