Summary : Presents a multi-disciplinary perspective on the physics of life and the particular role played by lipids and the lipid-bilayer component of cell membranes. Emphasizes the physical properties of lipid membranes seen as soft and molecularly structured interfaces. By combining and synthesizing insights obtained from a variety of recent studies, an attempt is made to clarify what membrane structure is and how it can be quantitatively described. Shows how biological function mediated by membranes is controlled by lipid membrane structure and organization on length scales ranging from the size of the individual molecule, across molecular assemblies of proteins and lipid domains in the range of nanometers, to the size of whole cells. Applications of lipids in nano-technology and biomedicine are also described.

Summary : The present book gives a multi-disciplinary perspective on the physics of life and the particular role played by lipids (fats) and the lipid-bilayer component of cell membranes. The emphasis is on the physical properties of lipid membranes seen as soft and molecularly structured interfaces. By combining and synthesizing insights obtained from a variety of recent studies, an attempt is made to clarify what membrane structure is and how it can be quantitatively described. Furthermore, it is shown how biological function mediated by membranes is controlled by lipid membrane structure and organization on length scales ranging from the size of the individual molecule, across molecular assemblies of proteins and lipid domains in the range of nanometers, to the size of whole cells. Applications of lipids in nanotechnology and biomedicine are also described. The first edition of the present book was published in 2005 when lipidomics was still very much an emerging science and lipids about to be recognized as being as important for life as proteins, sugars, and genes. This significantly expanded and revised edition takes into account the tremendous amount of knowledge gained over the past decade. In addition, the book now includes more tutorial material on the biochemistry of lipids and the principles of lipid self-assembly. The book is aimed at undergraduate students and young research workers within physics, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, nutrition, as well as pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences. From the reviews of the first edition: "This is a highly interesting book and a pleasure to read. It represents a new and excellent pedagogical introduction to the field of lipids and the biophysics of biological membranes. I reckon that physicists and chemists as well as biologists will benefit from this approach to the field and Mouritsen shows a deep insight into the physical chemistry of lipids." (Göran Lindblom, Chemistry and Physics of Lipids 2005, vol. 135, page 105-106) "The book takes the reader on an exciting journey through the lipid world, and Mouritsen attracts the attention with a lively style of writing ... . a comprehensive view of the ‘lipid sea’ can be easily achieved, gaining the right perspectives for envisaging future developments in the nascent field of lipidomics." (Carla Ferreri, ChemBioChem, Vol. 6 (8), 2005)

Summary : A biochemist shows how we can finally control our fat—by understanding how it works. Fat is not just excess weight, but actually a dynamic, smart, and self-sustaining organ that influences everything from aging and immunity to mood and fertility. With cutting-edge research and riveting case studies—including the story of a girl who had no fat, and that of a young woman who couldn’t stop eating—Dr. Sylvia Tara reveals the surprising science behind our most misunderstood body part and its incredible ability to defend itself. Exploring the unexpected ways viruses, hormones, sleep, and genetics impact fat, Tara uncovers the true secret to losing weight: working with your fat, not against it.

Award-winning personal trainer Bruce Krahn provides an outline for health and well-being that is formulated for the individual. He determines just how much food a person should be eating and what kinds of exercise should be done based on body type, fitness level and personal goals. The focus is on fat loss, not weight loss, which will subsequently lead to improved health and increased levels of fitness. In an approach that is accurate and comprehensive, but not mired with medical jargon or gimmicky promises, Krahn helps men and women alike develop an action plan for taking control of their life. The Fat Fighter Diet is a guide to assist those who are dedicated to achieving optimum health and permanent fat loss. It's like having your own personal trainer and dietician, to help you fight the fat!

Summary : At the Heyside branch of Slim-Plicity, the women are struggling valiantly with their waistlines. Stella, the sylphlike group leader, is very encouraged. They are going to be the slimmest group in the north-west and qualify for a celebration buffet. Meanwhile, in a nearby pub, members of the Fat Women's Support Group agree that dieting is a tool of women's oppression used by men and the media. It's time to change the public perception of fat by being proud to be big. Sandra, an English student at the university is torn: she wants to be slim, but she doesn't want to be oppressed. Helen wants to be slim but eating is the only thing that relieves the boredom of her life. And Stella herself is discovering that thin does not always equal perfect bliss...As the various members of Slim-Plicity and the FWSG try to find happiness, the question is: to diet or not to diet?

In this wise and funny book, Deirdre Barnard stands up and tells it like it is - about life in the Barnard family as they coped with the successes and losses that befell them, about the heartless intrusions into privacy that were the flip side of fame, about bereavement and true friendship and the sustaining power of family. Deirdre Barnard is an entertaining and courageously forthright storyteller with a wicked wit. This is a moving account of her sometimes painful but ultimately uplifting personal journey; its compassion and humour will touch us all.

Summary : "When I first decided to write this book it was because I wanted to share my weight loss experience with others. I figured that if I could overcome a life long struggle with obesity then others could as well. I compiled all my tips in one place hoping that after people read them they would understand that weight loss is an achievable goal. The odd thing is, the more I wrote the more I realized that it wasnt a diet program alone that helped me to lose weight it was the fact that I had finally stopped lying to myself about why I was fat in the first place."
