Summary : Biomining is the use of microorganisms in the recovery of metals from ores. During bioleaching, metals such as copper, nickel or zinc are oxidized through microbial action from the water-insoluble sulfide to the soluble sulfate forms. Although gold is inert to microbial action, microbes can also be used in gold recovery from certain types of ores because as they oxidize the ore, they open up its structure, thereby allowing a gold-solubilizing agent such as cyanide to penetrate the ore. The book describes several industrial bioleaching and biooxidation processes as well as the underlying theory and biology of the microbes involved.

Summary : The 25 chapters in this volume describe various fermentations and biotechnological processes which did not fit readily into preceding volumes. Among the topics are many that document the opening of new fields: coal in biotechnology, poly-?-hydroxy- butyric acid, biotechnological photosynthesis, accumulation and leaching of metals, microbial processing of tobacco, flax and leather, and future perspectives of biotechnology in space. Written by specialists from leading industrial countries who make their knowledge and expertise available to the reader, the contributions are highly applications oriented, thus following the basic principle of this series. They form at the same time a handy reference for everyone already working in the field. Together with the other volumes in the series they help to get a clearer understanding of the entire field of biotechnology.

Summary : The rapid progression of technology has significantly impacted population growth, urbanization, and industrialization in modern society. These developments, while positive on the surface, have created critical environmental problems in recent years. Biostimulation Remediation Technologies for Groundwater Contaminants is a critical scholarly publication that examines the release of heavy metals into the environment as a result of human activities and the use of nanoparticles and other technologies to manage and treat the effects of the pollution. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as toxicity of heavy metals, bioremediation, and acclimated bacterial strains, this book is geared toward environmentalists, engineers, academics, researchers, and graduate-level students seeking current research on bioremediation as an alternate way to manage or degrade heavy metal waste.
