Summary : Maraging steels are high-strength steels combined with good toughness. They are used particularly in aerospace and tooling applications. Maraging refers to the ageing of martensite, a hard microstructure commonly found in steels. Maraging steels: modelling of microstructure, properties and applications covers the following topics: Introduction to maraging steels; Microstructure of maraging steels; Mechanical properties of maraging steels; Thermodynamic calculations for quantifying the phase fraction and element partition in maraging systems and precipitation hardening steels; Quantification of phase transformation kinetics in maraging steels; Quantification of age hardening in maraging steels; Maraging steels and overageing; Precipitation hardening stainless steel; Applications of artificial neural network on modelling maraging steel properties. With its distinguished authors, Maraging steels: modelling of microstructure, properties and applications is a standard reference for industry and researchers concerned with maraging steels and modelling as well as users of maraging steels in the aerospace and tooling sectors. The book includes both conventional maraging steels and precipitation hardened (PH) stainless steels. Provides an overview of maraging steels including microstructure and mechanical properties Reviews thermodynamic calculations for quantifying the phase fraction and element partition in maraging steels Includes chapters on the quantification of phase transformation kinetics and age hardening in maraging steels

Summary : The third in a series of meetings to review the technical status of the high-nickel maraging steels was held on July 24 and 25, 1963, at the Biltmore Hotel in Dayton, Ohio. Again, the purpose of this review was to discuss the technical progress which has been made with the maraging steels, not only since the previous review but also in the sum total. The ultimate objective was to determine the pertinent properties of these steels, to delineate the optimum techniques for processing and fabricating them, to define the important problems to be expected in using them, and to identify means to eliminate or circumvent these problems. During the four sessions, which occupied two full days, 24 technical presentations were made by members of a number of Government agencies and facilites, industrial concerns and research organizations. Abstracts of the presentations are recorded in the Appendix. In the summary section, highlights and inferences of the presentations made during the review are reported.

Summary : The fine-scale microstructures of the 18Ni(250) and 18Ni(300) grades of maraging steel have been examined using electron microscopy of thin foils and extraction replicas in conjunction with electron-diffraction and electron-probe analyses of particles extracted from these steels. The microstructure of both steels in the annealed condition consists of small, equiaxed martensite grains containing a high dislocation density but few microtwins. The main source of the strengthening that occurs in these steels during aging is the precipitation of extremely fine particles of intermetallic compounds. The major precipitate, Ni3Mo, appears to nucleate on dislocations, and during the early stages of aging it occurs in the form of ribbons or rods. A second precipitate, which nucleates homogeneously, appears as small spheres in the early stage of aging. The identity of this precipitate is not certain, but indirect evidence suggests that it is Ni3Ti. Upon continued aging, both types of precipitates assume the form of platelets or discs. The softening that occurs in these steels upon overaging is believed to result from the rapid growth of reverted austenite plates and the resolution of precipitate particles in the vicinity of the austenite plates. Summary : Steels and computer-based modelling are fast growing fields in materials science as well as structural engineering, demonstrated by the large amount of recent literature. Steels: From Materials Science to Structural Engineering combines steels research and model development, including the application of modelling techniques in steels. The latest research includes structural engineering modelling, and novel, prototype alloy steels such as heat-resistant steel, nitride-strengthened ferritic/martensitic steel and low nickel maraging steel. Researchers studying steels will find the topics vital to their work. Materials experts will be able to learn about steels used in structural engineering as well as modelling and apply this increasingly important technique in their steel materials research and development.
