Summary : This book, the first study of its kind, examines the economics behind motorsports, in particular Formula One. Chapters discuss the costs involved in Formula racing and how they are borne by teams, promoters and racers. The book also looks at how society, the public and the private sectors stand to benefit economically from the motorsport industry. Other issues like the economics of TV rights, sponsorship and sustainability are also addressed, again for the first time in an economics book. Moving beyond the economics of what happens off the track, the book also undertakes a serious examination of what goes in to making a winning team and what having a winning racer can do for a team’s fortunes. Mourão’s highly relevant and contemporary book also looks at how motorsport teams confront the challenges of the modern sporting world, including the changing dynamics of sports media and considers the future of Formula 1 as motorsports evolve.

Summary : Tissue engineering as a technology and as a therapeutic has captured worldwide attention and commitmentbecause it has such potential in the care of humanity. Because we are not as yet able to craft robust three dimensional vascular and ductal structures to support the development of complex parenchymal organs, the initial focus of the field has been on thin tissues that can be nourished by diffusion alone. The best example of this class is cartilage. Thought by some to be a relatively simple tissue in the early days of tissue engineering, deep study of this tissue has shown it to manifest great complexity.Yearsof experimental and clinical effort have begun to untangle the clues that will allow us to reproducibly characterize, gener ate and clinically apply engineered cartilage with positive effects.World wide researchers and clinicians are intently focused on this goal and it has come time to step back and make a good assessment of our progress.

Summary : The human spine with its primary and secondary curves looks like a standing wave. Is it possible, asks the author, that energy echoes like a standing wave between these curves in order to maintain the structural and neural integrity of the spine and nervous system? That question led Dr. Wieder into research on the resonance of the spine. Her studies reveal that each bone of the spine has its own tone and frequency, and that applying specific vibrational frequencies directly to the vertebrae generates a sympathetic response that activates the embedded harmonics that help maintain healthy functioning. This book provides an overview of the history of harmonic healing from ancient times to the present, and chapters on how sound creates form and the neurobiological basis of vibrational healing. But the core of the book is about a vibrational therapy called bone toning, how it was developed and how it can be applied.

Summary : Governed by strict regulations and the intricate balance of complex interactions among variables, the application of mechanics to vehicle crashworthiness is not a simple task. It demands a solid understanding of the fundamentals, careful analysis, and practical knowledge of the tools and techniques of that analysis. Vehicle Crash Mechanics sets forth the basic principles of engineering mechanics and applies them to the issue of crashworthiness. The author studies the three primary elements of crashworthiness: vehicle, occupant, and restraint. He illustrates their dynamic interactions through analytical models, experimental methods, and test data from actual crash tests. Parallel development of the analysis of actual test results and the interpretation of mathematical models related to the test provides insight into the parameters and interactions that influence the results. Detailed case studies present real-world crash tests, accidents, and the effectiveness of air bag and crash sensing systems. Design analysis formulas and two- and three-dimensional charts help in visualizing the complex interactions of the design variables. Vehicle crashworthiness is a complex, multifaceted area of study. Vehicle Crash Mechanics clarifies its complexities. The book builds a solid foundation and presents up-to-date techniques needed to meet the ultimate goal of crashworthiness analysis and experimentation: to satisfy and perhaps exceed the safety requirements mandated by law.

Summary : Team Sports Training: The Complexity Model presents a novel approach to team sports training, examining football (soccer), rugby, field hockey, basketball, handball and futsal through the paradigm of complexity. Under a traditional prism, these sports have been analyzed using a deterministic perspective, where the constituent dimensions of the sportsmen were independently examined and treated in isolation. It was expected that the body worked as a perfect machine and, once all the components were maximized, the sportsmen improved their performance. If the same closed recipe was applied to all the players that formed part of the squad, the global team performance was expected to be enhanced. As much as these reductionistic models seem coherent, when contrasted in practice we see that the reality of team sports is far more different from the closed conditions in which they were idealized. Team sports contain variable, heterogeneous and non-linear constrains which require the development of a different logic to organize their training. During the last years, ecological psychology, the dynamical systems theory or the constraints-led approach have opened interesting fields of research from which many conceptual foundations can be applied to team sports. Based in this contemporary framework, the current book presents the study of the players and the teams as complex systems, using coordination dynamics to explain the emergence of the self-organisation episodes that characterize them. In addition, this thinking line provides the reader with the ability to apply all these innovative concepts to their practical training scenarios. Altogether, it is intended to challenge the reader to re-think their training strategy and to develop an original theory and practice of training specific to team sports.

Summary : Heart failure is an inability of the heart to deliver blood (and therefore oxygen) at a rate commensurate with the body's requirements despite normal cardiac filling pressures. Heart failure is common and increasingly so, given the increase in the aging population; it has a high morbidity and a very high mortality. In the UK, at least 1-2% of the population suffer from heart failure as a result of left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Approximately the same number again has asymptomatic left ventricular systolic dysfunction. It is a big problem. A number of effective therapeutic and non-therapeutic treatments exist. This pocketbook elegantly summarizes the background, the diagnosis, and the clinical evidence for the most effective treatments available for heart failure patients.
