Summary : 'This book covers all the necessary aspects of our knowledge on nasopharyngeal carcinoma, from anatomy, histopathology, epidemiology, experimental studies, clinical manifestations, clinical and laboratory diagnostic methods to the latest imaging techniques. It also contains all of the information necessary for the clinician to reach the proper staging of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and to treat the tumor efficiently. In addition, it offers guidance on screening family members in order to better control very early tumors or even precancerous conditions. This second and fully revised edition updates comprehensively the knowledge on nasopharyngeal carcinoma and provides readily available access to the experience accumulated in an endemic region covering many aspects of this disease. The editors also provide an up-to-date and comprehensive reference of interest to all who interact with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, whether it be in a clinical, laboratory or research setting. The authors of various chapters are specialists in their respective fields, and this new edition is again carefully edited by Andrew van Hasselt and Alan Gibb.

Summary : This volume intends to contribute to “translational medicine and biology”. By this, we mean a bi-directional process whose aim is to develop knowledge from basic science towards diagnostic and therapeutic applications and reciprocally to raise new questions for basic scientists. One general requirement for translational research is to establish a multidisciplinary knowledge base shared by the actors of various specialties. This is precisely the aim of the 12 chapters of this book. It will be useful for scientists, including PhD students, who want to become more familiar with the main concepts of NPC pathology, medical imaging and current therapeutics. Conversely, medical doctors who want to update their knowledge of NPC biology will benefit from chapters on viral and cellular oncogenesis and various aspects of host-tumor interactions.

Summary : The digestive organs are the most frequent site of cancer in the world, accounting for approximately 30% of all malignant tumors. This prominent position has been present for many decades in spite of marked shifts in the freq uency of cancer of specific organs. The most remarkable shift has been the decrease in gastric cancer rates occurring concomitantly with an increase in colon cancer rates in most 'western' industrialized societies. Important exceptions to this rule, as well as other epidemiologic evidence, indicate that the opposite trends for gastric and colon cancers are not inevitable consequences of each other. Although genetic ally determined precancerous syndromes are well recognized, it is generally agreed that environmental factors play an overriding role in digestive cancer causation. The most obvious environmental factors seem to be the result of what we eat, drink, or smoke. Although the nutritional component of the diet is of unquestionable importance, the nonnutrient elements in our diet have also proven to be influential causative factors. Several studies have focused on the microenvironment at the level of the mucosa or the digestive organs as a micro cosmos where forces promoting and inhibiting carcinogenesis are operating for a prolonged period of time. Their interaction eventually determines the presence or absence of a malignant tumor. Our understanding of such modulating forces, hopefully, will someday allow us to modify the microenvironment in a favorable way and attain the goal of cancer prevention.
