Summary : The first real cases video atlas of neuromuscular disorders that is supplemented with multiple-choice questions, and updates on the illustrated topics. It is easy to search and read. It is perfect for preparation to the neurology and neuromuscular boards and an excellent way to update the experts. By replacing the descriptive text with vivid illustrative videos, the reader will have more time to face the intellectual challenges of these cases instead of trying to build a mental picture of these cases first. Short and well-edited video clips from real clinic stories supplemented with challenging multiple choice questions, provides an excellent way to bridge the gap between overflow of information and short attention span. The chapters are arranged according the symptoms instead of diseases, yet, diseases are listed in the index if one wants to see all videos relevant to a specific disease. Close to 300 video cases* taken directly from a real neuromuscular clinic, illustrating a myriad of disorders and shedding light on their diagnosis, and treatment and giving updates about many of them provides an invaluable approach that should benefit any one who is interested in neuromuscular disorders which comprises more than 50% of presenting disease to general neurologists and even to general practitioners. Some rare diseases are also described, giving an opportunity for the new trainees to see them so that they can diagnosed them if they see them again which may not happen very often. *Due to size limitations, the videos are not included with any eBook version.

Summary : “Next generation” sequencing techniques allow for more detailed analysis of exons and introns in multiple genes at the same time. This will reveal many mutations that potentially lead to exon skipping. To functionally test these a lot can be achieved with a limited set of protocols, while for the intentional induction of exon skipping different tools and target genes are involved and the translational path from in vitro splicing to in vivo tests in animal models requiring a more extensive set of protocols. Exon Skipping: Methods and Protocols provides scientist with a comprehensive guide to many of the methods and techniques used for exon skipping, such as methods on how to discriminate “real polymorphisms” from mutations that affect splicing. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical Exon Skipping: Methods and Protocols seeks to aid scientists in the continuing study of exon skipping.

Summary : Neuromuscular Function and Disorders focuses on the various processes underlying disordered neuromuscular function. Topics covered include the nature of membrane defects in myotonia and familial periodic paralysis; the disorder of neuromuscular transmission responsible for myasthenia gravis and the various pseudo-myasthenic syndromes; and the disorders of Schwann cell function which cause demyelination. This book is comprised of 28 chapters divided into two sections and begins with a discussion on the normal anatomy and physiology of peripheral nerve and muscle. Included in the first section are descriptions of the ionic mechanisms responsible for the resting and action potentials of nerve and muscle; the sequential stages in neuromuscular transmission; excitation-contraction coupling; the sliding filament mechanism of myofibrillar shortening; and the morphological and functional properties of motor units. The neurophysiology of exercise and muscle fatigue is also considered, along with the nature of the trophic influences exerted by the motoneuron and muscle fiber upon each other. The second half of the book deals entirely with various diseases of peripheral nerve and muscle, together with diagnostic procedures and therapeutic management. A consistent theme in this section is the recognition of neural abnormalities in diseases hitherto considered as primary disorders of the muscle fiber. This monograph should be of value to neurologists, medical students, research workers, and students and research scientists in physiology, zoology, pharmacology, kinesiology, and physical education.

Summary : Nine years have elapsed since the second edition of this book was published. In this time the principal advances in neuromuscular diseases have been in the application of molecular genetics to understanding the aetiology and pathogenesis of this group of disorders. As a result many previously unrecognised disorders have been charac terised. Some clinical syndromes, such as the limb girdle dystrophies, have become better defined. In many such instances the new genetic information has led to major advances in knowledge of the biology of cell structures, for example, the membrane structural and channel proteins. The clinical syndromes themselves, and their patho logical and electrophysiological characteristics, however, remain as important as ever, since they constitute the clinical problem itself and, indeed, the database from which all other concepts emerge. Knowledge of the pathogenesis, genetics, and molecular biology of neuromuscular disorders is essential both in developing and applying new therapies and preventive measures, and in formulating genetic and prognostic advice. However, this informa tion does not necessarily always define clinically useful syndromes. Myotonia, for example, is an electrophysiological finding in some syndromes in which it is un detectable by clinical examination, although the phenomenon itself was originally defined as a clinical entity. The limb girdle muscular dystrophy syndromes can be defined by severity, distribution of weakness, age of onset, sex distribution and other characteristics and many of these can be better understood by study of the under lying defect in cell structural proteins.
