Summary : I was gratified by the most favorable reception and wide usage received by the first edition of this book. A decade seems to be a short period for a book on pathology, and yet it witnessed many important changes of concepts, along with a formidable growth of knowledge. The second edition required extensive reorganization. There are new chapters on mitochondriopathies, on peroxisomal diseases and on spongy myelino pathies. Major revisions and new additions were necessary in many chapters, for instance those on the dysplasias of the cerebral and of the cerebellar hemispheres, which were largely reorganized. The chapters on perinatal pathology were reordered and reorganized to give a more logical sequence of prenatal, perinatal and postnatal lesions. The entire text was worked over for brevity. A wealth of new references was added with the. aim of staying abreast with the literature up to summer 1988. All refer ences were double checked for errors. My gratitude goes to Mrs. Gisela Ropte and Mrs. Cynthia Bunker for their untiring, diligent help. As a result, this second edition is an essentially rewritten text. Advance in the prevention of human suffering is based on a thorough understand ing of the nature of disease. I hope that this text will continue to be of service in this behalf. Perhaps it may also reflect and foster the intellectual curiosity which makes the "reading of brains" so interesting an occupation. Gottingen, 1989 Reinhard L.

Summary : Forensic Neuropathology provides superior visual examples of the more commonly encountered conditions in forensic neuropathology and answers questions that arise regarding neuropathological findings. The work includes values for frequently-encountered clinical assessments, and contains a more comprehensive summary of aging/dating of various neuropathological processes than is available in any other single current source. General pathology residents, forensic pathology and neuropathology fellows, and general pathologists and clinicians involved in referred cases will find this book extremely useful, as will individuals in allied fields such as law enforcement officers and attorneys. Forensic Neuropathology aims to: (1) provide a concise summary of practical information frequently needed in forensic neuropathology cases; (2) include selected material previously known but perhaps not significantly emphasized in current literature; and (3) where possible, to suggest aging/dating parameters for certain neuropathological findings relevant to forensic neuropathology testimony. As a selective reference, the volume emphasizes practical issues and focuses on the most commonly encountered issues among neuropathology and medical examiner professionals. * Over 800 high-quality full-color photographs, gross and microscopic as well as illustrative line drawings * Use of actual cases, briefly summarized and illustrated to emphasize key principles * Focuses on the most-commonly encountered cases as relate to forensic incident and covers these aspects in depth and detail

Summary : This book is written for pathologists and trainees in forensic pathology and neuropathology who will have to conduct forensic neuropathology autopsies. It will provide them with the basic knowledge to conduct a thorough postmortem examination of the nervous system, describe and document the relevant pathological changes, and interpret these findings in a way that will be helpful in determining the cause and manner of death. Great importance will be placed on the objective and rigorous documentation of the pathological findings, because many of these autopsy reports will be re-examined in the context of legal inquiries and proceedings. A companion Website will offer the fully searchable text, an image bank, and additional e-figures.

Summary : This textbook provides practical information on how to perform and interpret smears and use smears for diagnostic intraoperative neuropathology. The book covers most aspects of brain biopsies that require intraoperative or "frozen section" diagnosis, including tumors, non-neoplastic lesions, infectious diseases, and metastases to the brain. The author also discusses more general aspects of smears, including their preparation and general interpretation. Emphasis is on the structural information about brain lesions supplied by the technique of smears, as well as the patterns of smears produced by different tumors. More than 200 full-color illustrations complement the text.

Summary : Greenfield's Neuropathology, the worlds leading neuropathology reference, provides an authoritative, comprehensive account of the pathological findings in neurological disease, their biological basis and their clinical manifestations. This account is underpinned throughout by a clear description of the molecular and cellular processes and reactions that are relevant to the development, and normal and abnormal functioning of, the nervous system. While this scientific content is of paramount importance, however, care has been taken to ensure that the information is presented in a way that is accessible to readers working within a range of disciplines in the clinical neurosciences, and that also places the neuropathological findings within the context of a broader diagnostic process. The new eighth edition incorporates much new information, new illustrations and many new authors, while retaining the depth, breadth and quality of content so praised in previous editions. Each chapter opens with an introductory section designed to offer an integrated approach to diagnosis, taking account of clinical manifestations, neuroradiological and laboratory findings as well as the neuropathological and molecular genetic features of the diseases being considered. Strong emphasis has been placed on facilitating the retrieval of neuropathological information by non-neuropathologists grapping with differential diagnoses or seeking information on broad categories of neurological disease, and boxes and tables are used to present important symptoms and signs, patterns of disease and other features for ease of reference. High quality line and photographic illustrations, the majority in full colour, are all available on a companion CD, to complete the offering.
