Summary : "The nucleation of water vapor on ions in atmospheres of helium and argon was studied using an expansion type cloud chamber. Separation of the positive and negative ions was achieved so that the nucleation could be studied as a function of both the sign of the ionic charge and the supersaturation. A semiphenominological theory was developed as an extension of the classical theory to include the effects of the ionic charge on the nucleation process. The theoretical model of the prenucleation embryo was assumed to possess an oriented dipole surface layer with the direction of orientation dependent on the sign of the ionic charge. The theory predicts not only the increase in the nucleation rate compared to that for homogeneous nucleation and a difference in rate between positive and negative ions, the negative ions having the higher nucleation rate, but also predicts a correction term to the classical theory of homogeneous nucleation for polar molecules which exhibit an electrical double layer at the liquid surface. Comparisons between the experimental and theoretical results for homogeneous nucleation, and nucleation on both positive and negative ions were made and the results used to draw some conclusions as to the possible structure of the prenucleation embryo"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Summary : "Absolute homogeneous nucleation rates in a supersaturated mixture of water vapor and helium are measured using a long sensitive time expansion chamber and a method devised by Kassner and Allard. A pulse technique is employed to produce the nucleation in an effort to suppress disturbing influences of vapor depletion and droplet growth. The time-varying nature of the supersaturation during the nucleation pulse is taken into account by an integration over the pulse. Observed and theoretically predicted droplet concentrations are related by an assumed nucleation rate law which is adjusted until the total droplet populations predicted by integration of the assumed law agree with experiment to within ±10%. The empirical nucleation rate law that results from this analysis is compared to the theoretical results of Becker and Döring, Frenkel and Courtney. Summary : The last decade has been marked by a rapid growth in statistical mechanics, especially in connection with the physics and chemistry of the fluid state. Our understanding in these areas has been considerably advanced and enriched by the discovery of new techniques and the sharpening of old techniques, ranging all the way from computer simulation to mode-mode coupling theories. Statistical mechanics brings together under one roof a broad spectrum of mathematical techniques. The aim of these volumes is to provide a didactic treatment of those techniques that are most useful for the study of problems of current interest to theoretical chemists. The emphasis throughout is on the techniques themselves and not on reviewing the enormous literature in statistical mechanics. Each author was charged with the following task. Given N pages, (a) pose the problem, (b) present those aspects of the particular technique that clearly illustrate its internal workings, (c) apply the technique to the solution of several illustrative examples, and (d) write the chapter so that it will enable the reader to approach key citations to the literature intelligently. These volumes are designed for graduate students and research workers in statistical mechanics. Nevertheless, because of the range of techniques and their general utility, they should be useful in other areas as well.
