Summary : As soon as Dr. Stephen DeFelice coined the phrase nutraceutical, product and supplement developers swung into action. Yet among the numerous books available on nutraceuticals, there is none that systematically lists, categorizes, and analyzes nutraceutical extracts and formulations in a pharmacopoeia-like manner. Handbook of Nutraceuticals, Volume 1: Ingredients, Formulations, and Applications lists information on many ingredients used in nutraceuticals, developing their formulations and applications. The book includes contributions from experts with pharmaceutical backgrounds, providing an examination of nutraceuticals from a pharmaceutical perspective. Building a foundation with coverage of historical background, definitions, and challenges, the book offers insight into nutraceutical ingredients from plant, animal, and mineral origin. It then covers the characterization of nutraceuticals’ physicochemical, analytical, pharmacological, and pharmacokinetic classification, followed by information on regulatory requirements. The book highlights applications in cardiovascular disease, bone and joint treatments, diabetes management, weight management, skin health, probiotics and prebiotics, tranquilizing medicinal plants, dietary foods, and more. Interest in new diet regimens and new products for increased health and longevity will continue to grow, giving dietary supplements an increasing amount of cupboard space in most households. With quality of content unsurpassed by many resources, the book discusses the characterization processes for nutraceuticals based on the contributors’ experience in pharmaceuticals. It then explores how those proven techniques may be applied to the development and manufacture of nutraceutical products.

Summary : Two of the most popular nutraceutical products on the market, omega-3 oil and glucosamine, were originally derived from waste products. Discarded oil from the manufacture of fishmeal became wildly popular as omega-3, a polyunsaturated fat, and the fully hydrolyzed chitosan from shrimp and crab shell, glucosamine, found wide use in joint health. Hundreds of tons of marine by-products are available annually and previous commercial success, together with an overall consumer interest in novel healthy food ingredients, are driving both research and commercialization in the area of marine nutraceuticals. Edited by pioneers in the field, Marine Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods details information on a variety of commercially available and newly developing value-added products. Beginning with an overview of current marine nutraceuticals, the book discusses the origin of omega-3 oils, their beneficial effects on brain health, and their stabilization and delivery into functional foods. It covers the derivation and use of chitin, chitosan, and partially hydrolyzed chitosan as fat- and cholesterol absorbing agents and provides a detailed review of the health benefits and methods for the production of glucosamine. Providing an overview of the ACE-inhibitory and blood pressure reducing properties of marine proteins, it considers the functional constituents of marine algae and seaweed, including its carotenoids, and examines the cancer preventing potential of shark cartilage. The book also analyzes the use of marine microorganisms as a renewable resource and marine sources of calcium. The final chapter describes the discovery and development of a novel immunoenhancing polysaccharide complex derived from the microalgae, Chlorella. An unparalleled single-source reference to the discovery, development, and use of value-added products from marine sources, Marine Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods provides the foundation for continuing the dramatic growth in this exciting field.

Summary : Phytochemicals are components acting individually, additively or synergistically, usually as a component of whole food, that have the characteristics of providing protective, preventative and possibly curative roles in the pathogenesis of cancer and other chronic disease progressions. Nutraceutical is a term used to describe beneficial phytochemicals. The mechanisms of action of nutraceuticals may be one of several. Free radical scavenger and antioxidant nutraceuticals can nullify damage by any number of biochemical mechanisms, but some also exert benefit by enhancing immune function. A conservative economic analysis was done in 1993 of solely hospital care costs and the roles that three nutrient antioxidants could exert on cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and cataracts. The study considered the potential impact of only three antioxidants, vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene, and the possible annual savings in hospital care costs alone, which could exceed 8 billion dollars. Expert public health physicians believe that as much as 70% of disease is preventable. The chapters in this book were organized to reveal existing and emerging knowledge of nutraceuticals found in garlic, soy and licorice. Lead chapters discuss the epidemiological evidence, and following chapters discuss chemical or biochemical evidence at the cellular level, as well as the presentation of some clinical data. A major conclusion of the overall effort is that the science of nutraceuticals is very incomplete, but that findings to date have great promise.

Summary : Although health claims for nutraceuticals range from the fantastic to the sublime, most of these claims are based on cell culture studies and have not been validated in humans, making them inadequate for public health recommendations. Focusing on human population-based research (epidemiology studies), Nutraceuticals and Health: Review of Human Evidence explores the role of nutraceuticals in human health, disease prevention, health promotion, and as an adjunct to disease treatment. The editors and their team of recognized experts deliver a comprehensive scientific review of the latest research. The book opens with a general background of nutraceuticals and human health, then covers health and disease areas such as cancer, lipidermia and cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome with obesity, diabetes and hypertension, respiratory health, the gut microbiome, and cognitive decline. It then concludes by addressing the methodological issues that must be addressed in the conduct of epidemiological research on nutraceuticals in health and disease. Although nutraceuticals hold significant promise in alleviating the suffering from disease, for this potential to be fulfilled, much more research is needed to document safety and disease risks in humans. Addressing important knowledge gaps, the book includes cutting-edge summaries that highlight both the biological and epidemiological findings of relevant studies of nutraceuticals in health and disease. Taking an unusual, yet crucial epidemiological focus, it examines whether, and what kinds of, evidence exist to support a role for nutraceuticals in disease risk, prevention, and treatment.
