Summary : For low frequency applications in the field of biomedical engineering, the reduction of dynamic range due to low frequency flicker noise and DC offset of the amplifier becomes increasingly significant in low voltage CMOS technology. For example, the bandwidth of neural signals falls in the frequency range where flicker noise is dominant. The objective of this thesis is to design a low noise instrumentation amplifier to eliminate the inherent flicker noise in CMOS devices and achieve a low residual DC offset by using the technique of chopper stabilization. Conventional chopper stabilized amplifiers require a wideband amplifier and an additional low pass filter to eliminate the modulation noise. By using a two stage amplifier with a chopped wideband gain stage and a Miller compensation stage which also acts as a low pass filter, the DC offset and flicker noise of the amplifier can be minimized. Simulations show that chopping essentially removes most of the flicker noise in the baseband leaving behind only the wideband thermal noise. The proposed amplifier was designed in AMI 0.5 um CMOS technology. The amplifier, simulated with resistive feedback, had a closed loop gain of 54 dB and a closed loop -3 dB bandwidth of 5.34 kHz. The amplifier, simulated with capacitive feedback, had a closed loop gain of 40 dB and a closed loop -3 dB bandwidth of 25.4 kHz. With a chopping frequency of 500 kHz, chopper stabilization improved the amplifier signal to noise ratio by 10 dB without increasing power consumption or layout area.
