Summary : This new book, edited by internationally renowned specialists, also pools the experience of consultants from both Europe and the US. It is divided into three main sections: Organ Preservation, Organ Harvesting and Surgical Techniques. Many different organs are profiled, including the heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, intestine and bowel. The various aspects of preservation are discussed including cooling and preservation solutions, which are of special interest as researchers are actively exploring the composition of those solutions. Longer term preservation of the heart is still an unsolved problem and this is considered, as well as the pros and cons of organ donation from live or cadaveric donors. Fully referenced and illustrated with over 50 line drawings, Organ Preservation and Transplant Surgery will be of particular interest to those involved in the often complex surgery of organ harvesting or trainees in transplantation surgery. It gives clear accounts of techniques and a detailed update in the underlying science that determines and currently limits organ storage. It will also prove invaluable to the younger researcher who needs a clearer understanding of the scientific basis of organ preservation and the clinical need for better organ preservation.

Summary : During the past 10 years, there have been many international meetings on the storage of organs prior to transplantation, and several have led to the publication of proceedings; there have also been a number of other books on this subject-. Most of these publications have concentrated on practical clinical aspects of organ preservation and on empirical animal experiments directed towards well-defined clinical objectives. Progress was rapid at first, but it is now generally agreed that there has been little improvement in techniques during the past 5 years, although understanding has certainly increased. In 1980 the Tissue Preservation and Banking Committee of the Transplantation Society decided that a fresh approach to the problem of improving preservation methods was needed: it was decided to hold a conference at which an opportunity would be provided to return to basic principles and to examine some of the advances that have occurred in recent yelns in areas of physiology that might be important for further improvements in preservation. The conference was held in Cambridge, UK, in April 1981 and this book is based upon the papers presented to that meeting and the work of a small discussion group that met after the main meeting. The book starts with six basic review chapters, followed by sections on the effects of ischaemia and anoxia, and on biochemical and pharmacological aspects of hypothermia. Chapters dealing with organ preservation by initial perfusion followed by hypothermia, and by continuous hypothermic perfusion, follow.

Summary : Written and edited by recognized experts in the field, the new Artech House Methods in Bioengineering book series offers detailed guidance on authoritative methods for addressing specific bioengineering challenges. Offering a highly practical presentation of each topic, each book provides research engineers, scientists, and students with step-by-step procedures, clear examples, and effective ways to overcome problems that may be encountered. This first-of-its-kind volume addresses the important challenge of organ preservation and reengineering. The book presents cutting-edge techniques for damaged livers and hearts via normothermic perfusion, hypothermic machine perfusion for the liver, kidney and pancreas, and imaging techniques to assess the viability of injured kidneys. Professionals and researchers also find methods to decellularize whole organs to create scaffolds for tissue engineering. Moreover, the book presents an approach to enhancing hepatocyte recovery from marginal livers.

Summary : Organ Repair and Regeneration: Preserving Organs in the Regenerative Medicine Era encompasses updates on all organs, from the kidneys, to the lungs, liver, pancreas, intestines, and beyond. Chapters cover the pathophysiology of ischemia-reperfusion, repairing organs with MSC, repairing cardiac allografts in situ, and much more. The book conceptualizes the idea that the modern approach to organ preservation is ante literam, a form of organ repair and regeneration which, per se, is referred to as a field of health sciences under the umbrella of regenerative medicine. This book demonstrates the merging of regenerative medicine and organ transplantation. Covers all aspects of organ preservation, repair and regeneration Addresses the repair of organs that experience an Ischemia/Reperfusion (I/R) injury, those that are intended for transplantation, and specific issues related to each organ Presented by editors and authors who are physicians, surgeons and researchers in the field of organ transplantation and regenerative medicine

Summary : Advances in the science of immunology have improved the success rate of organ transplantations since the mid twentieth century. Organ transplantation is now a lifesaving medical procedure for thousands of patients around the world with end-organ diseases. The lifesaving potential of transplantation has been limited by the number and quality of appropriate organ donors. The evolution of brain death criteria by the Harvard Ad-Hoc Committee Report has opened the door to understanding the importance of medical, legal and ethical challenges of organ donation in support of the growth of the transplant science. The possibility of organ donation from living donors has enhanced organ availability for patients with kidney failure. Modern inotropes and immunosuppression regimens have been critical to the success of other organ transplant procedures. However, the cornerstone of successful transplantation continues to be the appropriate selection, evaluation, preservation of organ tissues and the successful surgical procurement process to mitigate the impact of tissue ischemia and reperfusion. In this textbook, the art and science of organ donation and tissue preservation is examined. Through this authoritative text by leaders in the field, the editors provide a state of the art review of modern preservation techniques, patient selection and screening criteria, as well as best practices for multi-organ procurement. Information presented in the book will familiarize readers with the initial steps of determining organ availability which ultimately enables health care professionals to realize the extraordinary potential of successful multi-organ transplant procedures. This guide is intended to be a fundamental resource for students, residents, faculty and staff for all disciplines allied to health care delivery and organ donation.

Summary : Organ transplantation is increasingly complex and at the same time increasingly effective. The lengthening waiting list for cadaver organs now exceeds the supply several-fold. Most practicing physicians encounter only a few transplant recipients during a year of practice. This volume was written as a quick, but comprehensive, reference for medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and practicing physicians who interface intermittently with recipients and transplant teams. It contains twentyone chapters and twelve essays; together they present the standard of practice and also controversial issues such as the ethical dilemma of long waiting lists, noncompliance with long-term immunosuppression, the relationship between acute and chronic rejection, the living organ donor, the older cadaver donor, laparoscopic nephrectomy, retransplantation, organ banks and the national transplant network’s criteria for allocating organs to potential recipients, and the promise of xenotransplantation. Appendix I includes detailed information about immunosuppressive drugs.
