Summary : Remarkable progress in the development of new concepts and techniques used in reconstructive surgery of microtia/atresia of the external auditory canal (EAC) has been made since the beginning of the 21st century. Helical computed tomography has made a three-dimensional reconstruction of the soft tissue of the temporal bone surface and the cranium possible, and has laid the groundwork for a collaboration between plastic surgeons and otologists. This book presents the latest findings on reconstructive surgery performed jointly by plastic surgeons and otologists. Based on this concept, information on diagnosis, surgical procedures, outcomes, long-term results and psychology is discussed. Collaborative surgery offers advantages not only in terms of a better reconstruction of morphology and function, but also in terms of the lower number of surgical procedures required which reduces the psychological pressure and economic burden on patients.

Summary : Abstract : Purpose of review: The field of temporal bone simulation (TBS) has largely focused on the development and validation of simulators as training and assessment tools. As technology has progressed over the years, researchers have, however, envisioned new clinical applications for simulators extending to preoperative surgical planning and case rehearsal. The purpose of this article was to review the current state of the art in TBS and to highlight recent advancements in the field. Because of space limitations, we will limit our discussion to computer-based virtual reality simulators. Recent findings: A review of the recent literature on TBS revealed very limited application of virtual reality simulators for preoperative preparation. Current evidence suggests limitations in fidelity preclude successful patient-specific case rehearsal using virtual reality simulation. Further investigation and clinical evaluation are required to validate its use outside of training and skill assessment. Summary: This article provides an overview of the current use of virtual reality simulators with emphasis on preoperative planning. We evaluate the limitations of the technology, and discuss potential areas of improvement for the future. More studies are necessary to assess the value of virtual reality simulation for preoperative preparation.

Summary : This clinical reference on neurophysiologic monitoring during otologic, skull base, and head and neck surgery, is aimed at guiding surgeons in the use of intraoperative monitoring to reduce the risk of neural injury and should enable neurophysiologists, EEG technicians, audiologists, and neurologists to utilize their diagnostic testing skills in the operating room. A group of leading experts details the principles of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring, the capabilities and limitations of current monitoring modalities, the technical and interpretive problems that arise in the operating room, the electrophysiology of cranial nerves that are at risk during surgery, and the applications of neurophysiologic monitoring during specific surgical procedures. To enable all specialists to quickly access the information they need, the book covers basic electrophysiology and clinical applications separately. A helpful chapter on working in the operating room is also included.
