Summary : James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) was an American writer and poet, known as the "Hoosier Poet" and the "Children's Poet." He started his career in 1875 writing newspaper verse in Indiana dialect for the Indianapolis Journal. His verse tended to be humorous or sentimental, and of the approximately one-thousand poems that Riley published, over half are in dialect. Claiming that "simple sentiments that come from the heart" were the secret of his success. He satisfied the public with down-to-earth verse that was "heart high. " Although he was a bestselling author in the early 1900s and earned a steady income from royalties, he also travelled and gave public readings of his poetry. His favourite authors were Robert Burns and Charles Dickens, and he himself befriended bestselling Indiana authors such as Booth Tarkington, George Ade and Meredith Nicholson. Many of his works were illustrated by the popular illustrator Howard Chandler Christy. His works include: Afterwhiles (1887), Rhymes of Childhood (1890), The Flying Islands of The Night (1892), A Child- World (1897) and Riley Love-Lyrics (1899).

Summary : "One of the finest works to come out in recent years on cowboy songs, in addition to being the first good collection of the cowboy's bawdy material. . . . A must for anyone who is a student of cowboy music--or anyone who just likes the sound of dirty subject matter rhyming." -- Hal Cannon, Journal of Country Music "A brave and honest step toward increasing our understanding of what cowboys really sing." -- Bob Bovee, Old Time Herald "A thorough piece of scholarship and collectanea and a valuable, welcome addition to cowboy song literature." -- Keith Cunningham, Mid-America Folklore "Logsdon has written the book with a scholar's attention to detail. But what shows through the scholarship is the collector's enthusiasm for the material. . . . A superb job in a difficult area." -- Angus Kress Gillespie, Journal of American History "A major contribution to the folklore and popular culture, history, and social psychology of American cowboy culture." -- Kenneth S. Goldstein, former president, American Folklore Society

Summary : Riley Mansfield is not your typical hero. He writes songs for a living, smokes pot for recreation and just wants to live and let live. But when he foils an apparent terrorist plot to blow up a small plane over his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina, he is thrust into the spotlight, which is exactly where he doesn't want to be. Suddenly, everyone wants a piece of him, including both major political parties. They aren't willing to take no for an answer, partly because it's an election year and partly because what happened on the plane may be a bit more complicated than it appears. Emboldened by his own obstinacy, Mansfield and his girl Friday, Melissa Franklin, lead the government and the Republicans on a sometimes merry, sometimes painful, sometimes lucky chase. Along the way, they stumble across unlikely friends - a Democrat strategist, a Rolling Stone writer, a pair of sympathetic FBI agents - and ruthless enemies. Theirs is a love affair of sex, drugs and country-folk set against a backdrop of political scheming, hidden agendas and an unraveling plan to maintain control of the government. The American people deserve to know the truth, and it's up to Riley to tell them...if he can live long enough to get the chance.
