Summary : Surfaces are often held to be of lesser consequence than 'deeper' or more 'substantive' aspects of artworks and objects. Yet it is also possible to conceive of the surface in more positive terms: as a site where complex forces meet. Surfaces can be theorized as membranes, protective shells, sensitive skins, even thicknesses in their own right. The surface is not so much a barrier to content as an opportunity for encounter: in new objects, the surface is the site of qualities of finish, texture, the site of tactile interaction, the last point of contact between object and maker, and the first point of contact between object and user. Surface Tensions includes sixteen essays that explore this theoretically uncharted terrain. The subjects range widely: domestic maintenance; avant-garde fashion; the faking of antiques; postmodern architecture and design; contemporary film costume. Of particular emphasis within the volume are textiles, which are among the most complex and culturally rich materialisations of surface. As a whole, the book provides insights into the whole lifecycle of objects, not just their condition when new.

Summary : After witnessing an act of domestic terrorism while training on his bike, Jake is found near death, with a serious head injury and unable to remember the plane crash or the aftermath that landed him in the hospital. A terrorist leader’s teenage daughter, Betsy, is sent to kill Jake and eliminate him as a possible witness. When Jake’s mother blames his head injury for his tales of attempted murder, he has to rely on his girlfriend, Laurissa, to help him escape the killers and the law enforcement agents convinced that Jake himself had a role in the crash. Mike Mullin, author of the Ashfall series, delivers a gripping story with memorable characters and all-too-real scenarios.

Summary : For some, our media-saturated culture points to the decline of Western civilization; for others, it points to the dawn of a bright future. For Nathan Roberts, the mediated landscape is a place to thoughtfully engage with these tensions. This unique memoir, meditative and philosophical, chronicles Nathan’s absorption in the vital, inspiring, and often maddening power of media and entertainment. With wry self-effacement and raw honesty, he calls us to conceive of media not only as an abstract, postmodern phenomenon, but as a digital architecture that creates real meeting space. Exploring social media, music, film, art, theater, standup comedy, and more, Nathan shows us a world of entertainment that reflects the universal hunger for connection.

Summary : Surface tension measurements were made on ten aliphatic aldehydes, the eight normal aldehydes from butanal to undecanal inclusively and two iso aldehydes, iso pentanal and isobutanal. Specially purified benzene and carbon tetrachloride were used to provide a check on the determinations. The agreement of the refractive indices and molar refraction with the literature values was used as a criterion of purity. When this agreement was not close the aldehydes were purified by the bisulfite method. The apparatus used consisted of a light source, a lens, a monochromatic filter, a curvette which could be held at a constant temperature, a microscope objective to magnify the drop profile, and a camera. The drop was formed and a picture was taken. On the developed negative of the drop the maximum diameter of the drop was measured with a comparator. The diameter of the drop was also measured in a second plane, at a distance from the vertex of the drop equal to the maximum diameter. From these two diameters and the density of the aldehyde the surface tension was calculated, using the tables prepared by E.A. Hauser. The surface tension of the aldehydes was determined at 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 degrees C. The surface tensions of the two iso-aldehydes were lower than those of the normal aldehydes. Iso pentanal gave an exceptionally low value of surface tension. The surface tension of the aldehydes showed a linear decrease as the temperature increased. The surface tension increased as the number of carbon atoms in the chain increased but this increase showed little regularity. The molar refraction was calulated from the values of Eisenlohr. The parachor was calculated using the data of Mumford and Phillips. The values found in this work were in substantially good agreement with the calulated values of the literature. A review of the field of surface tension from 1948 to date was given from three points of view: The trend to develop empirical formulae for the measurement of surface tension. Improvements in the pendant drop apparatus and method. The measurements that have been made of the surface tension of metals and other compounds and also the interfacial tension by the pendant drop method.
