Summary : A trio of eminent Hebrew Bible scholars-Francis Brown, R. Driver, and Charles Briggs-spent over twenty years researching, writing, and preparing The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon. Since it first appeared, BDB has been considered the finest and most comprehensive Hebrew lexicon available to the English-speaking student. Based upon the classic work of Wilhelm Gesenius, the "father of modern Hebrew lexicography," BDB gives not only dictionary definitions for each word, but relates each word to its Hebrew Bible usage and categorizes its nuances of meaning. BDB's exhaustive coverage of Hebrew Bible, Hebrew words, as well as its unparalleled usage of cognate languages and the wealth of background sources consulted and quoted, render BDB and invaluable resource for all students of the Bible.

Summary : Dr. Maurice Robinson is Associate Professor of Greek at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The 8674 Hebrew-Aramaic words of the Old Testament are not alphabetical in the most used Hebrew lexicon, Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius Hebrew and English Lexicon. These words are listed according to the root words of the Hebrew. This index lists the Hebrew and Aramaic words in alphabetical order, gives the Strong's Concordance number assigned to it by James Strong, and the exact page and column where the word may be found and discussed. To facilitate its use in connection with The Interlinear Hebrew-English Old Testament (where the Strong's number is printed directly over the word, this index lists the Strong's numbers in their numerical order in the first column. then the alphabetical listing of the Hebrew words is in the second column. The third column then gives the page and column where the word is discussed in the Hebrew lexicon. This takes all the mystery, and the frustration, out of using the Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew-Aramaic lexicons. Even the learned Hebrew scholars are apt to forget the root word unless he or she is constantly using them in regular practice. The student, or pastor, or other serious student, will be very unlikely to remember all the root words. Therefore, they will find this index a welcome help to quick and ready study of any of the 8674 words that may be under investigation.

Summary : All previous Biblical Hebrew lexicons have provided a modern western definition and perspective to Hebrew roots and words. This prevents the reader of the Bible from seeing the ancient authors' original intent of the passages. This is the first Biblical Hebrew lexicon that defines each Hebrew word within its original Ancient Hebrew cultural meaning. One of the major differences between the Modern Western mind and the Ancient Hebrew's is that their mind related all words and their meanings to a concrete concept. For instance, the Hebrew word "chai" is normally translated as "life", a western abstract meaning, but the original Hebrew concrete meaning of this word is the "stomach". In the Ancient Hebrew mind, a full stomach is a sign of a full "life". The Hebrew language is a root system oriented language and the lexicon is divided into sections reflecting this root system. Each word of the Hebrew Bible is grouped within its roots and is defined according to its original ancient cultural meaning. Also included in each word entry are its alternative spellings, King James translations of the word and Strong's number. Indexes are included to assist with finding a word within the lexicon according to its spelling, definition, King James translation or Strong's number.

Summary : The Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament contains the complete vocabulary of the Hebrew Bible, extended with variants from the Oriental and Samaritan textual traditions, the Ben Sira fragments, the Dead Sea Scrolls, etc. It takes full advantage of the enormous advances that have been made in Semitic linguistics since the publication of older dictionaries like Gesenius and Brown-Driver-Briggs. User-friendly Another important advantage is that it offers a strictly alphabetical order of entries rather than an arrangement by verbal roots. This user-friendly feature makes the dictionary especially suited to the beginning student of classical Hebrew, but will also save the more advanced user much time. Specialist users will find here a wealth of bibliographical information on Old Testament exegesis. Most up-to-date dictionary The third edition of Ludwig Koehler and Walter Baumgartner's Hebrew dictionary is widely acclaimed as the most up-to-date dictionary for the Old Testament and related literature in biblical Hebrew and Aramaic. Wide range of users The complete and unabridged translation has been prepared by an international team of Hebrew and Old Testament scholars. Combining scholarly thoroughness with easy accessibility, the dictionary meets the needs of a wide range of users from the beginning student of biblical Hebrew to the specialized scholar in biblical studies, Semitic studies or ancient Judaism, as well as academic libraries, theological seminaries, and institutions. Volume 1: Aleph - Heth ( 365 pp.) Volume 2: Teth - Ayin ( 539 pp.) Volume 3: Pe - Sin ( 458 pp.) Volume 4: Shin - Taw ( 428 pp.) Volume 5: Aramaic. Extensive Bibliography (290 pp.)

Summary : The need of a new Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament has been so long felt that no elaborate explanation of the appearance of the present work seems called for. Wilhelm Gesenius, the father of modern Hebrew Lexicography, died in 1842. His Lexicon Manual Hebraicum et Chaldaicum in V. T. Libros, representing a much riper stage of his lexicographical work than his earlier Hebrew dictionaries, was published in 1833.
