Summary : After failing a critical assignment overseas, Will Robie must investigate a murder accusation against his father--but to save him, he'll have to face a violent and deadly fallout in this New York Times bestselling thriller. Will Robie escaped his small Gulf Coast hometown of Cantrell, Mississippi after high school, severing all personal ties, and never looked back. Not until the unimaginable occurs. His father, Dan Robie, has been arrested and charged with murder. Father and son haven't spoken or seen each other since the day Robie left town. In that time, Dan Robie--a local attorney and pillar of the community--has been elected town judge. Despite this, most of Cantrell is aligned against Dan. His guilt is assumed. To make matters worse, Dan has refused to do anything to defend himself. When Robie tries to help, his father responds only with anger and defiance. Could Dan really be guilty? With the equally formidable Jessica Reel at his side, Robie ignores his father's wishes and begins his own desperate investigation into the case. But Robie is now a stranger to his hometown, an outsider, a man who has forsaken his past and his family. His attempts to save his father are met with distrust and skepticism...and violence. Unlike the missions Robie undertook in the service of his country, where his target was clearly defined, digging into his father's case only reveals more questions. Robie is drawn into the hidden underside of Cantrell, where he must face the unexpected and possibly deadly consequences of the long-ago choices made by father and son. And this time, there may be no escape for either of them.

Summary : A senior federal judge’s incisive, unsettling exploration of some of the paradoxes that define the judiciary today, Why the Innocent Plead Guilty and the Guilty Go Free features essays examining why innocent people plead guilty, why high-level executives aren’t prosecuted, why you won’t get your day in court, and why the judiciary is curtailing its own constitutionally mandated power. How can we be proud of a system of justice that often pressures the innocent to plead guilty? How can we claim that justice is equal when we imprison thousands of poor Black men for relatively modest crimes but rarely prosecute rich white executives who commit crimes having far greater impact? How can we applaud the Supreme Court’s ever-more-limited view of its duty to combat excesses by the president? The federal judge Jed S. Rakoff, a leading authority on white-collar crime, explores these and other puzzles in Why the Innocent Plead Guilty and the Guilty Go Free, a startling account of our broken legal system. Grounded in Rakoff’s twenty-four years as a federal trial judge in New York in addition to the many years he worked as a federal prosecutor and criminal defense lawyer, Rakoff ’s assessment of our justice system illuminates some of our most urgent legal, social, and political issues: plea deals and class-action lawsuits, corporate impunity and the death penalty, the perils of eyewitness testimony and forensic science, the war on terror and the expanding reach of the executive branch. A fundamental problem, he reveals, is that the judiciary is constraining its own constitutional powers. Like few others, Rakoff understands the values that animate the best aspects of our legal system—and has a close-up view of our failure to live up to these ideals. But he sees within this gap great opportunities for practical reform, and a public mandate to make our justice system truly just.

Summary : Sixteen-year-old Cassie Jo Stoddard agreed to house sit for relatives on the weekend of September 22, 2006. It was something the teenager had done before…but this time something went terribly wrong. When the family returned home at the end of the weekend they found Cassie lying on their living room floor brutally stabbed to death. Detectives focused on two of Cassie’s classmates who had briefly visited her on the night that she was murdered: Torey Adamcik and Brian Draper. Initially both boys denied any knowledge of the crime, but after two separate interrogations, Brian Draper told detectives a chilling story of murder straight out of a horror movie. The two boys were immediately arrested, and a shocking videotape was discovered that seemed to depict the two teens not only planning the cold-blooded murder, but celebrating it. Community outrage was strong and immediate. The public demanded justice. But was the video actually what it appeared to be: a cold-blooded documentary that detailed the plotting of Cassie’s murder; or something else entirely? Could anyone uncover the truth in time and convince a jury that sometimes things aren't always what they appear to be? The Guilty Innocent is narrated by Shannon Adamcik, mother of Torey, one of the accused boys. It takes readers behind the scenes of a trial where prosecutors cared more about public opinion than truth, defense attorneys, who had never argued a murder case, were in over their heads, and a young boy’s life hung in the balance. The United States is the only country in the world that will charge a juvenile as an adult and sentence them to life without parole. As the mother of one such child, I know exactly what happens when a juvenile is placed in adult court where they cannot defend themselves. They are immediately cut off from all human contact, locked in isolation, and railroaded through a justice system they simply cannot comprehend. Consequently, many of these juveniles are sentenced too much longer and harsher terms than their adult counterparts. I've personally lived through this, and I was compelled to write about it. I began for the simple reason that I had lived through this horrendous ordeal and I ached for someone to confide in. But reliving the most painful part of my life was extraordinarily difficult. Ultimately the only reason that I was able to persevere was my deep belief that the story was important and needed to be told. That is still true. This is a true story and no one can tell it better than the people who lived it. A crime reporter can look at the details of a case, but they cannot tell you how it feels to live through it. I can and I did. I used the pre-trial and trial transcripts, copies of the police reports, the autopsy and DNA reports, and DVD recordings of all of the evidence in the case. I've done copious research. But more importantly, I take readers step-by-step through what it feels like when your 16-year-old son is accused of first-degree murder; all the odds are stacked against him; and his defense is in the hands of attorneys you can’t fully trust to come through for you.

Summary : Book 2 of the Henry Parker series by bestselling thriller author Jason Pinter. As I lie in bed with Amanda, ignoring another late-night call from my ex, a shot rings out in the New York night and a beautiful starlet dies outside the city's most popular nightclub. This is the kind of story I was born to chase—but I never dreamed this story began over a hundred years ago…. Suddenly another life is taken, the bullet fired from one of the deadliest guns ever made. Both victims are highly controversial, their murders more like public executions. My search leads me into the twisted world of The Boy—a world defined by a demented code of honor and shocking, long-buried secrets of the world's most infamous outlaw. When this assassin realizes I'm getting too close to the truth, uncovering the past could jeopardize everything I care about. Because in his world there's a fine line between good and evil, and the difference between innocence and guilt depends on who's holding the gun…. "An author who dares to take the traditional thriller in bold new directions." —New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen "Jason Pinter knows what he’s doing. The Fury rocks. READ IT!" — New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly Originally published in 2008.

Summary : On the flip side of The Blackboard Jungle story of several years ago is Mountridge High School - the showcase of American public high schools. Mountridge citizens are affluent, civic-minded, cultured, and dedicated to getting the best possible education for their children. Their offspring do not have to be sent to private schools, because M.H.S. outshines them all. Mountridge High has easily available funds, modern amenities, state of the art technology, excellent teachers, and professional staff members.Mountridge High School, however, hides a cancer which devours it - drug abuse. School administrators, trustees, police, and parents, all deny the problem which the humble classroom teacher knows only too well. Money buys not only drugs, but also immunity and protection from criminal prosecution. Although big money translates to forgiveness of sins, it does not prevent the destruction of promising young lives. The Guilty Teacher's vast tapestry of characters clearly depicts the intricacy of the American public school system. School administrators, some corrupted by power and influence and the need to curry favor with influential citizens, often separate themselves from their teaching comrades. A few try to do what's right but are often defeated by the system. Dr. Susan Baker, at least, understands the problems and fights from within the system for improvement. While some teachers just put their time in and do no more, teachers like Pete Clairwood strive valiantly to balance their calling to educate young people with the daily abuse from students and corrupted administrators and the pressure from their families to do anything besides teach. They are often pawns in administrativepolitical maneuvers and too frequently become convenient scapegoats for many of the school's and society's problems. The reader also comes to know the students - those already caught up in the greed, degeneration, and evil of the drug culture and those who struggle to escape from this culture without ostracizing themselves from their peers. Kenneth Waymart is the corrupted golden boy athlete who has gotten himself into a deeper hole with local drug dealers than he ever intended. Jeff Taskend III, Mountridge High's valedictorian, represents the terrible choices that good, conscientious teenagers feel they must make: choices between popularity or conformity, compromise or despair, parental approval or peer approval. Their shared love interest, Charlotte Van Tabor, hides a secret from her prominent parents and her adoring new boyfriend until she can no longer bear the strain.Immersion in the emotional roller coaster of these complicated lives is immediate and powerful. Tender family ties and adolescent love are offset by dark secrets of generation-old mistakes, terror-laden threats from dangerous drug dealers and desperate human passions.Although Susan Baker and other committed educators realize that the gap between the children and the adults has widened to such an extent in recent decades that it is practically impossible to cross, they are convinced that their profession might be the only one which can have a positive impact on shaping the future of America's children.
