Summary : A mystery for anyone who has ever hated a friend's boyfriend… Rachel Benjamin and her friends aren't looking forward to Emma's wedding. The groom is a rat, and nobody can understand what Emma sees in him. So when he turns up dead on the morning of the ceremony, no one in the wedding party is all that upset. Not even Emma. Rachel, who had the good fortune to find Richard floating facedown in the pool, is feeling as if she's woken up in an Agatha Christie novel. It doesn't help that everyone around her seems to have a motive for murder. So, while the cops detain Emma's family and friends at her isolated Adirondacks compound for the weekend, Rachel, an investment banker by trade, makes like Miss Marple (minus the gray hair and sensible shoes) and does some digging of her own. Her investigation gets especially tricky when Peter Forrest, the too-good-to-be-true best man, turns out to be both her number-one love interest and her number-one suspect. And Rachel can't help remembering the solemn pact she and her friends made back in college — a promise to rescue each other from bad relationships, using any means required. Has someone taken the pact too far?

Summary : Cody Garbrandt grew up in a rough town in the Central Appalachian region of Ohio, surrounded by a longstanding culture of fighting—and drugs. Raised in this environment by a single mom (his dad left him at the young age of three to reside in the Ohio State Penitentiary), Cody grew up fighting, and he grew up wild. His future seemed predestined to end in the coal mines, or in prison. Thankfully, Cody had visions of something more. His American Dream? Mixed Martial Arts. But a path to success wasn’t clear. He spent as much time fighting in the streets as he did in the gym—one bad decision away from losing everything. Then, at age 20, Cody’s brother introduced him to five-year old Maddux Maple. Maddux was deathly ill with leukemia, his survival by no means assured. A unique friendship developed as they made a promise to each other: Maddux would beat cancer, and Cody would make it to the UFC and become world champion. Through five long years of pain and hardship, they both persevered; Cody, through the agony and sacrifices of fighting his way to the top, and Maddux through the horrors of chemotherapy. They loved and supported each other. They served as each other’s inspiration. And in December 2016, they made good on their pact: Cody won his UFC Championship belt, which he promptly presented to Maddux—the boy who had beaten cancer into remission. This is their story.

Summary : This ambitious historical novel is a follow-up to Amanda West Lewis's very successful novel, September 17, published in 2013. Peter Gruber is a ten year old German boy who, in May of 1939, is dealing with the drowning death of his closest friend, living with his mother in Hamburg. The novel follows his life through the war years and the ultimate defeat of Germany - and explores how an intelligent, sensitive youth responds to the propaganda and posturing of the Nazis. It also provides insights into the realities of living in a country at war, seen through the eyes of a boy who is drawn into the Hitler Youth and who has growing misgivings about what he is being told about his country and its destiny.

Summary : Three women carry out a vendetta against a drug dealer and secretly execute him in the Forest Preserves of Chicago. Unfortunately they do not end the mans life; someone else doestheir new enemy. Across the country in Washington, D.C., FBI Special Agent Howard Watson is brought into the mix. Watson, a seasoned professional, has been summoned to Chicago to assist the Chicago P.D. in unraveling a mystery: Why a seemingly insignificant drug dealer was murdered by an international drug lord who slipped from Howards grasp five years earlier? Watson is forced to join forces with the Chicago PD,the DEA and the ATF in order to nab the Peruvian drug lord who seemed to be conducting business under their very noses. Racing against the clock, Watson must figure out what the drug dealer and the drug lord have in common before the drug lord flees the U.S. Unbeknownst to the three women, they have opened a Pandoras Box that holds the keys to unlocking answers for everyone involved. "Once again, JoAnn Fastoff has written a novel that you will find yourself unable to put down, in her latest continuation of the Howard Watson Intrigue series, The Pact. What I loved most about The Pact is that when a double homicide occurs, you immediately think you know who did it, you just dont know why or how complicated matters truly are. Instead of a typical mystery where you try to find out who did it, in this case you try to figure out how and why the other elements of the plot tie together. I love a book that makes you think, and in The Pact, I totally enjoyed discovering the answers as the story unfolded. Events leading to a modern day double homicide actually begin 1966, in western Africa. As the story unfolds, Ms. Fastoff fills in the history of many of the characters. She shows how deep friendships were established among the main characters, especially four women. Their loyalty to each other is unwavering. I really appreciate the depth of her character development; this adds some great touches to the storyline. Close female friends who have banded together to help one of their own against her abusive partner, become embroiled in the plot when a crime that they are tying to cover up is intricately tied into one committed by a hit man who has no desire to leave witnesses around to identify him. The FBI also becomes involved with the case. This is where Special Agent Howard Watson steps in. Howard Watson does, and using modern technology, the FBI and Chicago P.D. try to gather their own clues before any more deaths occur. Spouse abuse, illegal drug sales, illegal arms, murder, betrayalthe list goes on. The Pact has it all. It takes talent to put such a complete tale together in a relatively short novel. JoAnn Fastoff obviously has that talent. I read The Pact in one sitting and loved all of it. I look forward to Howard Watsons next adventure." --Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views--

Summary : Poetry. In her newest collection, award-winning poet and memoirist Jennifer Militello confronts obsession, intimacy, and abuse. Through love poems inspired by such disparate spaces as a British art museum and the reptile house of a local zoo, poems comparing a romantic affair to the religious cult at Jonestown and a mother's role to a Congolese power figure bristling with nails, THE PACT offers an indictment against affection and a portent against zeal. This book places pleasure alongside pain, even as it delivers Militello's trademark talent for innovation and ritualization of the strange.
