Summary : Nanocomposites with Carbon-based nanofillers (e.g., carbon nanotubes, graphene sheets and nanoribbons etc.) form a class of extremely promising materials for thermal applications. In addition to exceptional material properties, the thermal conductivity of the carbon-based nanofillers can be higher than any other known material, suggesting the possibility to engineer nanocomposites that are both lightweight and durable, and have unique thermal properties. This potential is hindered by thermal boundary resistance (TBR) to heat transfer at the interface between nanoinclusions and the matrix, and by the difficulty to control the dispersion pattern and the orientation of the nanoinclusions. Thermal Behaviour and Applications of Carbon-Based Nanomaterials: Theory, Methods and Applications explores heat transfer in nanocomposites, discusses techniques predicting and modeling the thermal behavior of carbon nanocomposites at different scales, and methods for engineering applications of nanofluidics and heat transfer. The chapters combine theoretical explanation, experimental methods and computational analysis to show how carbon-based nanomaterials are being used to optimise heat transfer. The applications-focused emphasis of this book makes it a valuable resource for materials scientists and engineers who want to learn more about nanoscale heat transfer. Offers an informed overview of how carbon nanomaterials are currently used for nanoscale heat transfer Discusses the major applications of carbon nanomaterials for heat transfer in a variety of industry sectors Details the major computational methods for the analysis of the thermal properties of carbon nanomaterials

Summary : The inspiration for this book came from an American Carbon Society Workshop entitled "Carbon Materials for Advanced Technologies" which was hosted by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1994. Chapter 1 contains a review of carbon materials, and emphasizes the structure and chemical bonding in the various forms of carbon, including the four allotropes diamond, graphite, carbynes, and the fullerenes. In addition, amorphous carbon and diamond films, carbon nanoparticles, and engineered carbons are discussed. The most recently discovered allotrope of carbon, i.e., the fullerenes, along with carbon nanotubes, are more fully discussed in Chapter 2, where their structure-property relations are reviewed in the context of advanced technologies for carbon based materials. The synthesis, structure, and properties of the fullerenes and nanotubes, and modification of the structure and properties through doping, are also reviewed. Potential applications of this new family of carbon materials are considered. The manufacture and applications of adsorbent carbon fibers are discussed in Chapter 3. The manufacture, structure and properties of high performance fibers are reviewed in Chapter 4, and the manufacture and properties of vapor grown fibers and their composites are reported in Chapter 5. The properties and applications of novel low density composites developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are reported in Chapter 6. Coal is an important source of energy and an abundant source of carbon. The production of engineering carbons and graphite from coal via a solvent extraction route is described in Chapter 7. Applications of activated carbons are discussed in Chapters 8-10, including their use in the automotive arena as evaporative loss emission traps (Chapter 8), and in vehicle natural gas storage tanks (Chapter 9). The application of activated carbons in adsorption heat pumps and refrigerators is discussed in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 reports the use of carbon materials in the fast growing consumer electronics application of lithium-ion batteries. The role of carbon materials in nuclear systems is discussed in Chapters 12 and 13, where fusion device and fission reactor applications, respectively, are reviewed. In Chapter 12 the major technological issues for the utilization of carbon as a plasma facing material are discussed in the context of current and future fusion tokamak devices. The essential design features of graphite moderated reactors, (including gas-, water- and molten salt-cooled systems) are reviewed in Chapter 13, and reactor environmental effects such as radiation damage and radiolytic corrosion are discussed. The fracture behaviour of graphite is discussed in qualitative and quantitative terms in Chapter 14. The applications of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics and Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics to graphite are reviewed and a study of the role of small flaws in nuclear graphites is reported.

Summary : For more than 50 years, silicon has dominated the electronics industry. However, this growth will come to an end, due to resources limitations. Thus, research developments need to focus to alternative materials, with higher performance and better functionality. Current research achievements have indicated that carbon is one of the promising candidates for its exploitation in the electronics industry. Whereas the physical properties of graphite and diamond have been investigated for many years, the potential for electronic applications of other allotropes of carbon (fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibres, carbon films, carbon balls and beads, carbon fibers, etc), has only been appreciated relatively recently. Carbon-based materials offer a number of exciting possibilities for new applications of electronic devices, due to their unique thermal and electrical properties. However, the success of carbon-based electronics depends on the rapid progress of the fabrication, doping and manipulation techniques. In this Special Issue, we focus on both insights and advancements in carbon-based electronics. We will also cover various topics ranging from synthesis, functionalisation, and characterisation of carbon-based materials, for their use in electronic devices, including advanced manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing, ink-jet printing, spray-gun technique, etc.

Summary : Thermal Transport in Carbon-Based Nanomaterials describes the thermal properties of various carbon nanomaterials and then examines their applications in thermal management and renewable energy. Carbon nanomaterials include: one-dimensional (1D) structures, like nanotubes; two-dimensional (2D) crystal lattice with only one-atom-thick planar sheets, like graphenes; composites based on carbon nanotube or graphene, and diamond nanowires and thin films. In the past two decades, rapid developments in the synthesis and processing of carbon-based nanomaterials have created a great desire among scientists to gain a greater understanding of thermal transport in these materials. Thermal properties in nanomaterials differ significantly from those in bulk materials because the characteristic length scales associated with the heat carriers, phonons, are comparable to the characteristic length. Carbon nanomaterials with high thermal conductivity can be applied in heat dissipation. This looks set to make a significant impact on human life and, with numerous commercial developments emerging, will become a major academic topic over the coming years. This authoritative and comprehensive book will be of great use to both the existing scientific community in this field, as well as for those who wish to enter it. Includes coverage of the most important and commonly adopted computational and experimental methods to analyze thermal properties in carbon nanomaterials Contains information about the growth of carbon nanomaterials, their thermal properties, and strategies to control thermal properties and applications, allowing readers to assess how to use each material most efficiently Offers a comprehensive overview of the theoretical background behind thermal transport in carbon nanomaterials

Summary : Over the past 25 years coatings technologies have been influenced by the need to lower volatile organic contents (VOC) in order to comply with stricter environmental regulations as well as to reduce the use of costly petroleum based solvents. During this time the use of waterborne coatings in the architectural, industrial maintenance and original equipment manufacturing (OEM) sectors has continued to grow replacing solvent based coatings while meeting the ever decreasing VOC targets. In addition to waterborne coatings, other alternative technologies in the industrial and OEM sectors include powder coatings, uv-curable coatings and high solids coatings have had significant growth. Traditionally these coatings had the primary functions of protecting and decorating substrates. More recently, there has been growth in Research and Development and commercial product generation of coatings which have novel functions and sense and interact with their environment in addition to having the traditional protection and decoration functions. These coatings are often referred to as Smart Coatings. These types of coatings generally provide significant added value. Smart Coatings can be achieved in many ways such as by addition of additives and strategically designing polymer structures and coatings morphologies.
