Summary : In 1870, the" New York Herald" proclaimed that Ulster County was New York's "Ulcer County" due to its lawlessness and crime. The columnist supported his claim by citing that in only six months, "it has been the scene of no less than four cold blooded and brutal murders, six suicides and four elopements." Hannah Markle--the bane of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union--ran a Kingston saloon where murder and violence were served alongside the whiskey. John Babbitt confessed on his deathbed to murdering Emma Brooks, and Willie Brown--reputed member of the Eastman Gang--accidentally shot his best friend. The infamous Big Bad Bill, the "Gardiner Desperado," lashed out more than once and killed in a drunken rage. Discover the mayhem and murder that these and others wreaked on one of New York State's original counties.

Summary : The core of the book consists of the contents of nearly 100 Bibles arranged alphabetically according to the surname of the book's owner, and, thereunder, in progressions of marriages, births, and deaths. In all, more than 1,000 mostly 18th- and 19th-century inhabitants of Suffolk and Nansemond are here rescued from obscurity and further made accessible in the index to Bible records at the back.

Summary : 325 sites throughout all 20 townships and the city of Kingston in New York State's Ulster County illustrate the variety and changing architectural styles that have appeared over nearly 300 years in the Hudson River Valley and Catskill Mountains, from 17th-century Dutch limestone houses of the colonial era, through the Federal and Victorian periods, up to the Modernist architecture of the mid-1950s, tracing the history of one of the first regions in today's New York State to be settled by Europeans, including the Dutch, French Huguenots, and English. The author's survey of Ulster County architecture takes the reader through the cataclysm of the Revolution and the burning of the city of Kingston, New York State's first capital, in 1777, through post-Revolutionary expansion and the burgeoning commerce on the Hudson River, to the industrial revolution, the building of canals, and the railroad age. Grand mountain hotels and lavish hunting lodges are represented, as well as brickyards and old train depots and the modest homes of the poor and middle class. Information on most sites includes the histories of the owners, the architects, and the builders, as well as the social and historical context within which the structures were built.

Summary : "I grew up in Tillson in Ulster County, New York. I moved away, and so did my family, but I have come back as an adult to photograph Ulster County and discover it on my own terms. I have revisited people and places from my childhood, plus I’ve met more people and discovered more places. Photos of many of these people and places are included in this book, along with writings about my experience of coming to Ulster County and finding home again. I have highlighted various familiar businesses, roads, churches, landscapes, and more, including many of the people behind and in front of the scenes. While there is a special focus on Tillson, Rosendale, New Paltz, and the City of Kingston, this book also includes Saugerties, Hurley, West Hurley, Eddyville, Rifton, Ulster Park, Accord, Ellenville, Milton, Marlboro, Kerhonkson, Highland, East Kingston, Stone Ridge, Boiceville, High Falls, Lake Katrine, Shokan, Woodstock, Gardiner, Cottekill, Glenford, Cragsmoor, Glasco, the Town of Ulster, and the Town of Kingston. I shot all of the photos in this book between 2008 and 2018, and I also designed the book and wrote all of the text. It is a creation that I am very proud of. I hope that you enjoy it." -- Author's description

Summary : Situated in the scenic Hudson Valley, Ulster County is a lovely location to make a home and raise a family, but it wasn't always so pleasant. Unsavory characters and immoral events have sullied its name. In the 1870s, the Shawangunk Mountains inspired fear rather than awe, as groups like the Lyman Freer and Shawangunk gangs robbed and terrorized locals, descending from the protection of the wooded peaks. Kingston was torched, arson blazed in Kerhonkson and even the Mohonk Mountain House was threatened by flames. In 1909, the Ashokan Slasher's bloody crimes and sensational trial captured headlines across the country. Discover these and other salacious stories buried in Ulster County's history.

Summary : This book offers the full, annotated translation of a recently discovered Dutch account book recording trade with Native Americans in Ulster County, New York, from 1712 to 1732. The ledger contains just over two-thousand transactions with about two-hundred native individuals. Slightly more than one-hundred Indians appear with their names listed. The volume and granularity of the entries allow for detailed indexing and comparative analysis of the people and processes involved in these commercial dealings in the mid-Hudson River Valley. Waterman and Smith place this exceptional resource within its historical context, presenting figures and tables with aggregated data. They examine several key aspects of the intercultural exchanges, such as the high level of participation by Native American women and the growing importance of the deerskin trade in this region. In addition, the appendix contains individual profiles of forty Esopus and Wappinger Indians appearing in the Ulster County account book.

Summary : Five railroads once passed through Ulster County, with Kingston being the main hub. These railroads--the Central New England Railway, the West Shore Railroad, the New York, Ontario & Western Railway, the Wallkill Valley Railroad, and the Ulster & Delaware Railroad--provided a means to transport produce and products from New York State's emerging frontier to New York City, some 70 miles south of Ulster County. Ulster County Railroads provides a glimpse into the lives of the people who worked on the railroad and those who depended on it for transport of goods and personal transportation.
