Summary : Despite media attention and public awareness, recent advances in pharmaceutical and medical developments, heart disease in women is under-diagnosed, under-treated, and under-managed. Many women fail to present in the clinic when symptomatic, because of responsibilities at home or at work. Often the first presentation follows a cardiac event. Women are excluded from many clinical trials regardless of age or cardiac history, simply because most trials are aimed at male patients. This best-selling, updated title, aimed at changing this treatment of women's cardiac issues, covers all aspects of female cardiovascular disease. It is required reading for all practitioners who assess female patients.

Summary : Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US, with more women dying from heart disease than men. Women may have different presentation from men and often need a different approach to diagnosis and treatment. There are also unique topics of management of heart disease in women, including issues during pregnancy, lactation, and menopause. Many different health care providers, as well as cardiologists are involved in treating these patients. A manual reviewing diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease in women would help providers without specific cardiology training to deliver care with greater efficiency. A practical and comprehensive guide geared towards these providers would be a highly practical and valuable resource that would be utilized in everyday practice in offices that include urban clinics, general medicine offices, obstetrics and gynecology offices, as well as in the surgical subspecialties. This book will be a highly practical resource that can be directly applied to the issues that arise in everyday practice. There is no available book on the market that focuses on a broader approach to cardiac disease in women or focuses on non-cardiology providers (and their trainees) who have the need to know more about treatment of cardiovascular disease in women.

Summary : This book describes a wide range of interventional procedures currently employed in the treatment of cardiac diseases in women with the aim of enabling not only interventional cardiologists but also cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to refine their approach to female patients and thus improve outcomes. The book reflects the increasing awareness of gender differences with regard to coronary artery disease and structural valve heart disease. Examples include myocardial infarction, which carries a worse prognosis in women in part because they suffer from this disease mostly in the 7th decade of life, present more frequently with hemodynamic instability and later from symptom onset, and have fragile, small and tortuous coronary arteries that are more technically demanding in the context of primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Another example is symptomatic aortic stenosis, which carries a better prognosis in women who undergo trans-catheter aortic valve implantation partially due to a better annulus-prosthesis match, which leads to less residual paravalvular regurgitation, better left ventricular function and lower aggregation of comorbidities. Further, in women left ventricular response to aortic stenosis is typified by muscle hypertrophy with a small ventricular cavity. These differences are reflected in the clinical manifestations and their impact on diagnosis, treatment, and choice of tools and devices for use in interventional procedures. By explaining the at times subtle variances in disease and treatment techniques for female and male patients, this book will help practitioners select the most appropriate procedures and materials in a range of settings.

Summary : In the last 50 years significant numbers of men and women take little exercise in the course of their occupation. Computer keyboard, rise of private transport, world by television, household "labour saving" devices, mean that people work and play with a minimal physical effort. The benefits of doing regular exercise include a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and obesity. In addition, many people feel better about themselves during and after exercise. Regular exercise is also thought to help ease stress, anxiety, and mild depression. This book presents the latest research in this field.

Summary : This is an important and timely volume. The history of research in homocysteine metabolism can be divided into three periods. The first phase was the exploration of the individual reactions and metabolites that characterize the transmethylation and transsulfuration sequences. The former originated with his description of the biosynthesis of methylpyridine and culminated in the work of Cantoni and Axelrod. Similarly the finding that insulin contained cystine was a potent catalyst for the metabolic and nutritional studies of Rose and du Vigneaud. The description and the definition of homocystinuria, a rare inherited meta bolic disorder, marked the beginning of the second historical period. Where previously there had been few laboratories located largely in the United States soon there were numerous research groups representing many nationalities. The more intense focus led to major advances, both in the laboratory and in the clinics. Studies of afflicted individuals, when combined with investigations in experimental animals, provided the basis for a concept of methionine metabo lism that encompassed both transmethylation and transsulfuration. The central role of homocysteine was apparent.

Summary : Cardiovascular disease (CVD), once thought to be confined primarily to industrialized nations, has emerged as a major health threat in developing countries. Cardiovascular disease now accounts for nearly 30 percent of deaths in low and middle income countries each year, and is accompanied by significant economic repercussions. Yet most governments, global health institutions, and development agencies have largely overlooked CVD as they have invested in health in developing countries. Recognizing the gap between the compelling evidence of the global CVD burden and the investment needed to prevent and control CVD, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) turned to the IOM for advice on how to catalyze change. In this report, the IOM recommends that the NHLBI, development agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and governments work toward two essential goals: creating environments that promote heart healthy lifestyle choices and help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and building public health infrastructure and health systems with the capacity to implement programs that will effectively detect and reduce risk and manage CVD. To meet these goals, the IOM recommends several steps, including improving cooperation and collaboration; implementing effective and feasible strategies; and informing efforts through research and health surveillance. Without better efforts to promote cardiovascular health, global health as a whole will be undermined.
